I fished the Eastern Sierra New Years weekend with a few of my buddys. A buddy of mine and I floated a section one day.

Two pontoon boats, a dual sport on the hitch and a s*** load of gear. That's a lot of s*** for the 80, but she took it in stride.

Fishing was slow, but we all got into fish.

The weather was unusually cold. That made the fishing slow, but the drive home on the 395 was an adventure in itself. We were snowed on from Lone Pine to Santa Clarita. They closed the 5 and mysteriously left the 14 open. It was bumper to bumper on snow and ice.

I'd say 1/10 cars were spinning wheels and 1/20 cars were completely out of control. Cars and trucks were all over the road and spun out, in ditches, jack-knifing lanes. It's a little scary to see an 18 wheeler sliding sideways towards you.

After eight hours (should have been a four hour drive), we made it through to the valley and was ice and snow free.

I tell you it was a mess. I can't figure out why CHP/CADOT would close the 5 but leave the 14 open. Conditions were just as bad if not worse considering the extra cars that were re-routed from the 5.

nice pics. thanks for sharing. At least you weren't stuck trying to get home and forced to spend the night on, or near the grapevine like the poor souls being interviewed by the news folks.

Always enjoy seeing your pics and the 80.
They remind me of the pictures found in a Field and Stream magazine.

I think I've fished that part of the owens before, but it stayed slow the whole day! You're really starting to rack up the miles on 395 in the snow and ice. I agree, feel free to post loads of your great field and stream pics.

Nice pics Mike. I was planning on going up to the Owens over Christmas too.. but we didn't do Ridgecrest with my brother in-laws this year...

What part of the Owens did you guys fish?

Great pics Mike! Post up some more...

Mike... Looks like quite a trip... I agree why leave the 14 open but it did let you get home :-)
