HI FELLAS!!!! Ok. As some of you know I recently bought my 97 LX 450. 32K original miles. This afternoon I was driving and got a flat tire. Gnarly nail. Took the tire to tire shop. They told me the tire could not be worked on because the tires were over 10 years old. I did not know these were the original tires!!!! These tires look new with only 32K miles on them. So I'm driving with the spare on. Good or bad idea to be driving with original 14 year old tires? Do I need new tires? What do you fellas say? If I need new tires I'm thinking Costco. Suggestions?

You definitely need new tires. I have found discount tire to be cheaper than costco, especially with the lifetime rotate/balance and stores across the country.

X2 on Discount Tire. I have used them for 20 years and they will beat anyone's price and treat you right.

Thanks for your opinions fellas. I appreciate it! If I'm going to buy new tires for my truck I know there are a wide range of options. Stock tires are the Michelin LTX M/S 275 70 R16. I wont be taking my truck on gnarly trails, but I would like a more aggressive tire for some light trails. Of course I'm considering the 285s as well. BFs? Toyos? Coopers? Maybe back to the stock Michelins? What do you guys say?
Al

Go with the 285 Nitto Terra Grapplers! Great tire and a good value.

That is what I had before the 37's. Excellent all-around tire that wears very well.

A few votes for the Nitto Terra Grapplers. Most of my driving will be on the road. How do the Nittos do on the road? Noise?

They are a little bit louder than the stock Michelins but nothing like a mud terrain tire. They came new on my LX when I purchased it. I ran them for a year before moving up to 35 KM2s and they were great., both on and offroad. They fit fine stock w/o a lift as well. HTH!

I have purchased several sets of tires from Onlinetires.com. You can pick up from their warehouse and save the shipping charges as well.

If I could throw out a tire suggestion, check out the Falken High Country. They are pretty inexpensive and nice and quiet on the highway. I have them on 2 vehicles and really like them. Onlinetres has the stock size 275/70-16 for $136 and 285/75-16 for $156.

I had someone before suggest the Falken High Country. New for about $600! Sounds really good! I won't be going heavy on the trails, but I would have to research the tire a little. Performance? Wear? Warranty. Thanks again for the suggestions fellas. I'm still running on my spare. I'm hoping it's ok for me to do so. About 2 months would be good. I'm not really driving my truck much. I've put less than 1K miles in the last two months. My daily driver has become my bike!

Forum member GCRad1 has them on his 92 LC. He has been very pleased with them and inspired me to get them for my own 4Runner.

I've had them for 6,500 miles and so far like them very much. They are very quiet on the freeway. I've used them in the snow in Big Bear and also in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado and they worked great in snow. I've had them in the desert and they also did fine there. I really don't have anything bad to say about them. I also have them on my 86 Pickup and they have been great on it as well. I don't know that they will go 50k miles but at $50 less a tire than BFG AT's, I'm not going to complain.

Here's a picture of them on my 4Runner.

Thanks Ryan. Yup on GCRad1. I met up with him awhile back and talked to him about the Falkens. I'll check them out.

Mounted the 285 falkens a few weeks ago, loving them so far. The three ply sidewall is a plus for off road. Paid around 700 at Discount tire, mounted and balanced.

Hey Brad. May you post some pics please. $700 for 4 tires, yes?

I'm a fan of BFG's new Rugged Terrain tires. I have 2500 miles on them so far and think they are just as quiet as the Michelins that came stock on my gx460. They have an aggressive tread and I'm still getting similar gas mileage as the michelins. Toyota 4wd liked them in their most recent issue and ARB installed them on their SEMA 4runner they are building. ARB did get the tires for free - I'm sure that had something to do with the decision.

80BB. This is the first time I hear someone mention "new" Rugged Terrains. My 2003 Tacoma and most Tacomas and Tundras came stock with Rugged Terrains. My friends Rugged Terrains blew on him on the way to Santiago Peak. So... I've been skeptical about their performance on the trails. I will check out the "new" and see what's up with them. Thanks for the suggestion.

I ran both BFG and Nitto AT on my FJC. I like both. Currently have 35" Toyo MT on the 80 and love them.
