My first vehicle has an early 90's toyota truck but needed fullsize for towing. I have wanted another one for some time but got caught on Jeep for a few 12 year.... I have been parting out my jeep over the last few months and ready to buy an fj80.

the jeep got to big 40's and a diesel. wanting practical more family oriented more expidition than rock crawling. keeping the diesel which will power the fj80.

Trying to find a nice high mile unit and the plan is to rebuild the axles and suspension with a good 3" lift looking for clean interior my jeep lasted 12 years hope this will too. any one know of any? going to look at the 92 that has been on CK for a few months but thinking a 94 or 95 with disk brakes, ABS and dual Air bags might be a better starting point.

Thoughs? I know factory lockers would be nice but i think i would rather do ARB's with the torque and ~35 or 36's

I will be building bumpers and have a winch already what can be done with the air bag sensors for turn off's?

A lot of views but no comments.... if i was to find an fj80 with factory lockers what should i expect the price difference to be? w vs w/o

Welcome. I can't say that I've come across any here in Wichita but I can look around a bit. If you're wanting to have air bags look for '95-'97 as the '93 & '94's do not have air bags. Depending on how you plan to do the engine swap the '91-'94 might be a better option if you're looking to retain the Toyota trans. With regards to the lockers since you have experience with ARB's there's no reason to seek out only an OEM locked rig. Other than a recent issue with my rear locker I have been happy with it, the front not so much as it doesn't unlock as quickly as I would hope on the trail. Relative to tire size either lockers will be fine up to 37's or more unless you have a heavy right foot and copious amounts of torque post diesel swap.

Its so hard to say as most 80s are either built, owned by enthusiasts who want to build or by people who are completely ignorant to the "other life" these vehicles can have vs mall transport.

I only speak from my time looking at prices on these classifieds, craigslist and ebay (not an 80 owner, nor even an avid rock crawler), but I think as you get to older 80s you find a pretty big difference in locked vs unlocked when you talk about the first two categories - as you find that people like us are looking for lockers.

The non-enthusiasts are oblivious to the value of elockers, imho. So you can find these vehicles at times at no premium. These guys are never built, though.

Your going to spend the most $$ on the add-ons with a mid-90s LC that is from a non-enthusiast, so you are back to really weighing built vs stock, almost.

You can find something like this for < $3K 1992 Toyota Land Cruiser

But then you can drop 10K on add-ons, easily with bumpers, lockers, wheels, tires, etc.

Stuff like this is out there already built, but maybe missing stuff you want, etc:

1994 Lifted Toyota Land Cruiser

those are some good points. I have been eyeing that 94 for more than a month. the orange doesn't do it for me and every panel on it has been crunched some. looking for somethign my wife wouldn't mind driving. the dents aren't a deal killer but the welding/covering of rear lights are. I do like the rear bumper though. i will be getting one of those but probably building a front bumper adn sliders.

the 92 above has a lot of rust but evrything functions. also looked at one with a bark brown dash and carpet. why would toyota do that. got to be the ugliest interior ever but it's growing on me. thinking about making an offer on that one.

I will keep looking. Thanks for the input

17-18 with some sort of conversion?

that is why the 4bt diesel will be going in. hoping for 20-23

I have been staring to but the price hasn't come down either. not wanting to spend to much right now maybe in a few years adn swap everything to a nicer vehicle once I'm very happy with tke set up and getting the mpg i'm hoping for. most people claim 20 but with tweaking better
