Hey, I'm new here just wanted to introduce myself. I have a '85 yota std. cab with longbed frame. 22re carbed. I've had it for about 3 years now but it's sat that whole time until now.
Recently have gotten it running and idling fine, then the next morning go out and check it , wont start, only if gas is poured into the carb and it only keeps running if gas is continuously poured in. I don't know.

Might want to start by checking the mechanical fuel pump to see if that is getting gas (see if it is working).......... check fuel lines to carb to see if they are leaking or what not......... check lines from tank to fuel pump.....

you have a stuck or defective float. Try tapping lightly on the top of the carb, but it would be worth your while to pull the top of the carb off and clean the float bowl and inspect your float.

+1

and welcome aboard!

ok so i took it apart, well the top, measured the float hieght correctly i think,48mm top / 9 and a half bottom, and changed the needle valve. still didnt fill the carb. the float had a nick in the plastic on the bottom but didnt appear to be a hole, but maybe thats it? when i blow in the fuel inlet it only blows through when the float is at the bottom, if that helps.

You should get flow from the float down position until just before the float hits the middle position. ie, it should only shut down the fuel completely when it is past the mid mark. You might have to fiddle with the float to make it work. I would bend it so that it only shuts down the fuel when it is all the way at the top, and then put it together and check the fuel level through the window. if it is a bit high, pull it back apart and bend it down a little and recheck. Factory specs don't mean that much when things have been tweaked a bunch of times.

Good luck,

Dan
