I had a very similar clunk/pop noise in my '97, and it ended up being a bent passenger control arm (wtmf), and loose bolts holding the drivers control arm to the axle. Replacing the arm arm and tightening the bolts solved the issue.
*edit- I haven't read all the replies, but you may have worn eurethane castor correction bushings, especially if the truck got flexed out hard on a regular basis. Take the weight off the suspension and pry the axle away from the arms with a pry bar to see if you have any movement in there.
