New Battery Advice....

Here's my thoughts on this subject, which has been discussed to death here and should be made into a sticky.

AGMs require very strict recharge parameters that you will not meed in a 24V truck that does not have a very expensive external regulator, such as those designed for use in a boat or other such stationary application.

--> DO NOT waste your money on AGMs for an 24V truck, period.

Experience with 12V systems and AGM batteries and 24V systems can not be compared in any way, shape, or form.

Optimas used to be good, perhaps about 10 or 15 years ago, but all of the recent ones I have had experience with have not been anywhere near as good as the early ones. Build quality and where they are produced seems to have lot to do with it. The red tops seem to be the worst of the bunch.

Spiral cells sound cool, but really don't add up to much other than wasted surface area and and an efficient way to produce a cell that needs to be compressed to fit into its case.

Rectangular cells, as used in the Deka AGMS are superior in many ways.

East Penn / Deka batteries, as sold by Napa in Canada (but not necessarily in the USA) are very good. Their AGMs, from my experience over the past couple of years, are quite a bit better than the Optimas.

AGMs for motorcycles and ATVs make sense, and they very few that we have sold have done really well.

And that's it.... This subject has been beaten to death here and needs to be put into the FAQ or sticky section and locked. There are a few of us who would be pleased to provide substantial real world experience with batteries if you want.

Ditto what John said.

And to beat the donkey a little more: I've had no success with three rounds of 24V trucks and Optimas...red or yellow. There is something about the way the AGM's takes a charge which shows up in the 24V system. That difference shows up in the classic one overcharge, one undercharge. And it just goes downhill from there. I've tried a number of solutions. The best one was different batteries.

I would definitely use an AGM (ala Penn/Deka) as a 3rd, isolated from the starting batteries, or in a 12V application.

Check out the "Durability to overcharge" and "Sensitivity to charging" lines for the different batteries in this PDF:http://www.dekabatteries.com/assets/base/1081.pdf

Ahhh hell, check out the whole thread:-) https://forum.ih8mud.com/diesel-tech-24-volts-systems/343921-12v-parallel-batteries-question.html

Yah...sticky
