the cruiser i just got has some kind of tapping sound when running, i have no idea what it is, possibly.... exhaust leak, crank shaft pulley (wobbles when running), valves, i just dont know. so i was wondering if someone could come by to help me identify before i do something wrong, thanks jason (843) 452-6737

Jason:

Could you be more specific? Perhaps one of us could give you some indication of the problem if we first knew: Year, type vehicle, miles, when does the event occur, what specific attributes cause it to occur?

its a 1986 fj60 with 133,XXX miles, it makes the sound as soon as it is started and never goes away. i do not run it for to long because i do not want to do more damage. i have know idea what it is.....

Jason,

It sounds like it may be the loose pulley on the front of the crankshaft. It has a vibration damper on it that has a rubber core and it sounds like it needs replacing. I have had the rubber completely separate from the outer ring and make all kinds of racket. If this is not causing the noise you hear, you still need to replace it as it should not wobble.

You also may have a carbon build-up on a valve that can cause a loud knock. One remedy to clean carbon deposits is to slowly pour a quart of ATF into your carb while the truck is running. You may have to feather the throttle and add gas to keep the engine from stalling. Do this slowly and run a full quart through the carb. Your engine will smoke like you're fumigating for mosquitos, so don't do it in your garage.

Lastly, you may have some more than minor internal problems with the engine.

Without hearing it I don't have much more to add.

Keep us posted.

Jim

thats what the previous owner stated that the noise was from the crankshaft pulley, so if the pulley is not running true it could make a knocking noise. (thats where it seems to be coming from). i just did not know that a pulley could make that sound....
