I 80yo neighbor has a 1988 Toyota 1 ton with the 22RE engine. His truck started to run like crap and the radiator sprung a leak in the middle of nowhere (Kettleman City, CA)so he poured 5 cans of radiator stop leak. He drove it home (Exeter, CA) and found that he blew the head gasket. He left it parked for about 6 months. I trailered it to the shop for him.

The garage pulled the head and found the engine is shot. Water had sat in the cylinders way to long and rusted the block. I bought a used engine from a pick and pull from a low milage rolled 87 pre runner. They put the newer engine in as well as a new clutch, pressure plate, water pump and almost all new gaskets and seals as well as installed a new radiator.

Now the new engine is leaking from the timing chain cover. It is not just leaking but pouring out. They did replace the harmonic balancer seal before they installed the engine.

It ran like poo so he put it on the Dyno. He found three error codes that he cannot get to go away. One is the NOX and one was the Air Mass Sensor. I forgot what the other one is. He replaced the air mass sensor and one error code went away. He has checked everything related to the other two error code and nothing is wrong with the components. Says the computer is bad. I called Toyota and found that one for an 88 is unique and is $1,300.

Right now I'm into this truck for $750.00 for the used engine plus $2,175 for the work that has already been done. It still needs to be torn back down and have the timing chain cover gasket replaced, $400 parts & labor.

Does anybody have a computer that they no longer need? Maybe one that you did a V-8 swap on?

Try www.car-part.com they have a drill down menu that can search nation wide, or just in your state/area. I've had quite a bit of luck with them in finding unusual parts. Don't forget the dash....

you should check this grounding bolt.

If loose can cause no or poor idling. and misdiagnosis of sensors.
furthermore, the EFI wiring harness may have poor ground splices.

Also, You should check the ohm specs on the TPS and AFM.

Another reoccurring problem I have run into along these lines is the harness going to the TPS right where it does a hard turn at the throttle body. IF the other code which you can't remember is a TPS code, that could very well be your problem. It usually will also cause a rich/lean code. Good luck!

Found the problems. A broken wire coming from the Distributor and a bad ground were Wrist Pin said it would be. The shop wanted to argue until i handed them a print out of this post. He checked it and cleaned it and the third remaing error code went away.

Thank You All For all of you assistance. I really do appreciate it.
