Need smaller calipers to fit my 15" rims

Just thinking out loud, I guess, as I'd like to have an extra set of 15" steel wheels for trail use. You're right, though -- combined w/ the smaller rear brakes, it'd probably be a step backwards...

Maybe CDan con confirm, but I was under the impression that the fzj80 and the Taco had the same front calipers. They sure looked the same to me. Not that this effects the situation but I'm curious.

I also seem to recall that not all 15 inch rims would fit the Taco due to the size of the calipers, but I could be remembering wrong.

Yes, the Taco and FJ80 calipers look the same and have the same bolt pattern, but the rotor on the cruiser is about 1" thick, and that of the Taco is only about 1/2". I looked at swapping the calipers, but even with worn pads, the rotor is too thick to put them on. I even thought about unbolting the two sections on the Taco calipers and put a spacer in there to make it wider, but I suppose I'll be back at square one. I know I'm a bit stubborn here, but I really need to keep these set of steel rims I have(long story).

So, my options: 1. Swap '91-92 rotors and calipers and hope it bolt on to the knuckles.
2. Wheelspacer, but this axle is already wider that the stock Taco's IFS was.
3. New rims (ouch)

are you doing both axles?

my first comment is that 93-97 front calipers are supposed to fit inside most 15 inch rims so maybe try different rims. it is the rears that cause trouble and require grinding.

the second comment is that for front calipers there are competing views on whether the 91-92 front calipers will bolt onto a 93-97 knuckle housing or vice versa. According to C-Dan they don't and you must switch to a 91-92 knuckle housings (which will bolt on to a later axle). According to some guy in new zealand, they do because he has done it but he used used parts. worse case scenario is you can do it by changing over to 91-92 rotors/knuckle housing and calipers. try looking for a wrecked 91-92.

try this thread towards the end and the one i link to

if it is the rear discs a 91-92 switch won't help because that was the semi-floater. one possibility would be japanese through one of the canadian parts dealers. they had full floaters with rear discs before 1993 and for that matter on HJ61s too so I suppose it is possible they used a caliper that would fit inside a 15" rim that will bolt up to a 93+ axle. Try contacting G&S or Crushers or Radd cruisers on the international forum.

Sorry, this is a bit of a late response, but I just thought that someone may one day have the same predicament and a search might bring him to this thread and then he wouldn't know what the verdict is. So, to conclude, I got a pair of rotors and calipers for a '91 FJ80, and other than slightly having to modify the dustcover, it was a simple bolt-on affair. The rims now fit perfectly. Thanks for all the advise and suggestions.
