My pig is in the shop to convert the drum brakes to disc and I'm getting a quote for about $2900. Is this a good price? Is anyone aware of where I can find the kits to price them myself? I'm in Dallas TX.

I appreciate your help.

John

discs all around?

With a shop doing the work, could be that much. Used front brake parts off a 60 tend to run about $200-300 average, a rebuild kit is a good idea which runs about $200, if they use new rotors and calipers, add more, etc. I think the rear parts are around $200 if you source them yourself. Pretty sure the average price of a shop repacking the birfields is about a grand from what I've seen on mud.
It would be better if you could source the parts yourself and find a club there to help you do it.

Especially if they are just putting a bolt on disc kit up front.
:meh:

Adding discs to the front using 60 parts is pretty much the same as repacking the birfields other than that you'll have to grind a bit of the axle to fit the larger birfield.
Something that's good to know how to do anyways. :meh:

Does a disc conversion cost that much if you do it yourself? Is it better to use 60 parts or are the later 55 parts just as good? Does one need to remove the residual valve and get a porportioning valve if you are only doing the front? Do I ask alot of questions:p

yes, you do need to remove the residual valve and prop valve. it is there to keep a little bit of pressure for the wheel cylinders, which will cause the calipers to stay locked. the prop valve is to help balance the pressure between the front and rear.

post 79 is going to get you the best/beefiest parts. larger bell birfield (also easier to find if you need a spare/replacement), large pattern knuckles (also more common/stronger). only issue will be the steering arm taper for the tie rods, and they can be sleeved or you can use a different tie rod end.

i just bought a pig a couple weeks ago with a disc brake swap done on the rear axle.. and P.O. said that he got a kit from Poser on the board here.. he said the kit wasnt that expensive and was easy to install.... FYI
