The PO blew a head gasket and let water sit in the cylinders for about 6 months. They are very rusty.

I bought a used 22RE long block for $750 from a toyota auto recycling yard. It allegedly came out of a rolled 4runner with low miles. I installed the engine after I swapped oil pans. I started up the new to me engine and the rod went through the side of the block.

I still have the original engine but it needs bored to clean up the rust. Approximately how much am I looking at spending on this? The local auto parts can get me a rebuild one for $1,100 with a warranty.

Or does anybody have a 22RE in good condition that they want to get rid of.

1,100$ is a good deal for a rebuilt engine if the lower end was redone and it comes with installed parts i.e. crank shaft rods and pstons bla bla bla if your gonna pay 1,100 just for a core lower end ide say your getting riped off. A local machene shop should be able to bore and surface a lower end for a few hundred dollars.

If you really want a new engine this is the way to go, but all I did was find a parts truck with a good engine in it. There are a lot of ways to make sure the engine isnt going to crap out on you before you buy it so if you have patience you can find an engine to just swap in there for a couple hundred dollars. check craigs list and the locals.
