well I went to newport yesterday (newport antique auto hill climb), truck ran like a champ up and back no problem. I get in it last night and head to DQ for some ice cream and almost pass out before makng the round trip. Gas can give you a pretty good buzz if you sniff enough of it (see ya later brain cells). Anyhow I took the tank out after work this evening and I don't know how it held gas this long. PO had patched it at some time it looks like, and there is so much rust between the patch and the tank I could push through it with my finger nail.

Anyway what I am looking for is a good used gas tank for a 76 FJ40 (tank under passenger seat). I was hoping someone might have one laying around, possibly AJ I know you have the fuel cell in there now. I would appriciate any help I can get at finding one for a decent price (cheap I'm a broke bastard).

Thank You,
Chad P.

Most all of them I have seen are pretty beat by now if they're original. But a new tank is less than $300 from Toyota with a discount. Me? I'd buy a new tank and be done. Oh, skip the plastic tanks. I had one; more trouble than they're worth. A quick search in the 40 section will get you more details.

Yeah, the one I removed looked like swiss cheese on the bottom. The only thing holding the fuel in (mostly) was a thick layer of mud and clay between the tank and floor. Yes the fumes were awesome but at the time I smoked a lot and blowing up is never a good thing.

I'd save the pennies for a new one.

Sorry nothing here...

When I was originally restoring my truck, I thought I was smart to have bought a plastic tank. It can't be trusted for an accurate fuel reading since it expands and contracts with changing temperature. The reason I carry the 5 gallon tank on the back of my cruiser is that I ran out of fuel one too many times when the fuel gauge said I still had plenty. Buy a steel tank and not worry about it for another 30 years.

I already got rid of the one out of my spare 40 but I will see if any one down here has one. If nothing else comes up post up in the wanted section and offer to trade some of the spare parts you got with the truck.
Good Luck,
Mark

Chad,
I have an extra one. I ended up getting a really nice one from Kenny Ford some years back and still have my old one. Let me take a look at it this weekend. I remember wanting to replace the old one because it wasnt cherry, but I think it may be usable, but I will have to check. Let me get back to you tonight or tomorrow. You can email me at thecementhead@hotmail.com since PMs from here dont get forwarded and I never see them.

Rick.

Sweet, let me know Rick, I appricate the help.

Chad,
I dug the tank out. It looks pretty good except in one spot. The seam along the outside bottom is rusted. It looks to have some sort of hard putty on it right now (not my work) to seal it up. I dont remember it leaking, but I bought it 7 or so years ago. I took some pictures of it if you want to send me your email, I can send them to you. YOu can make the choice. BUy me a 6 of New Castle or ESB and it is all yours. Let me know what you want to do, I really have no clue on tank repair so, I dont know if it is fixable.

Rick.

Thank you for the tank Rick. It had a very minor leak which was repairable. Took me all of an extra hour to get it ready to go in. She's back on the road now and ready to do some wheeling.
