83 Toyota pickup. Alternator belt broke.:frown: While trying to take stuff apart to replace it, I found that the fan spins independently from the fluid pulley thing. It's hard as a mutha to hold the thing still to loosen the nuts to take the fan thing off so I can put the new belt on. I can barely fit my hand down in there. In the book it calls for a holder? Looks like a mini crow bar. Is this a real tool? Has anyone done this? Is there an easier or smarter way to do this? I am pretty stupid so please help. Thanks

you dont need to take off the fan.

the fan-water pump-power steering pump all use the same belt.

loosen the tensioning pulley: its the upmost pulley. loosen(dont remove) the 17mm nut on the pulley.

loosen the 12mm bolt adjacent to the 17mm nut.
this will allow the pulley to drop down and then you remove the belt.
just get it around the fan to take it out.

the alt has a 12mm bolt on the upper part. loosen that.
under the alt is a 14mm nut and a 14mm bolt. just loosen a few turns.

using muscle pull up on the alt.
place new belt on alt and crank pulley.
using a stick or pry par, push down the alt, while simoutainously tightining the 12mm bolt.
(use a divet in the alt body to push your tool into)
tighten the 14mm fasteners.
install fan belt.
tighten the 12mm bolt up, then the 17mm bolt. these last two dont get tightened extremly tight.

This things got AC too. Will that make any difference? If I don't have to pull the fan off that will be great. But I saw no way around it and that's what the FSM and Chiltons said to do. But you are Wristy so I will believe you.

LOL

you didnt mention A/C!
yeah that belt needs to come off too.

its only a 17mm bolt.
to get it back on, you will need to use either a 1" wrench to hold tension on it while tightening the bolt. or you can use the same method as described for the alternator

one thing about removing it, you may find it hard to get off the pulley grooves.
with enuff muscle you can do it.

but if not, take it out of gear, put a 19mm socket on the crank pulley and turn it while pulling on the belt.

Thanks, that was super easy since I didn't have to take the fan off. Yep, just had to take off two other belts to replace the belt that broke but it was pretty smooth.

You've got an '83 with (working?) A/C??

My A/C did work great until I had my engine rebuilt and the system was discharged? uh I think. I just need to recharge it. Expensive and I live in Alaska, A/C is only critical for about one month out of the year so I will most likely postpone it until I move away or indefinately. I got those sweet triangle windows that make your cheeks shake and truck veer into the other lane when you open them anyway. Thanks again for the help.

I have one of those. I borrowed a set of gauges and retrofitted it to R134, replaced the dryer and expansion valve. Total cost was around $100
