It must be spring. I did the flush today as part of my pre-Moab maintence. I temporarily inserted the Prestone "T" fitting at the heater outlet with a short piece of 5/8 heater hose and 3 clamps. After screwing the hose in, I reverse flushed the heater and radiator-total non-event. After the coolant had drained and the flushing started, there was very little crud, flakes or whatever. Just a small amount of the gray stuff n the overflow bottle. I flushed about 10 minutes, opened the block drain again, flushed somemore and then let it completely drain and refilled with Toyota Red. Thermostat also got done today-very easy. In the future I'll probably do the thermostat every other year. Up till now, I've just done the drain and fill every year with Toyota Red, but the insides looked spotless, even the old thermostat. On refill, it took 3 1/2 gallons-so close enough.

Someone mentioned reusing the thermostat gasket-I wouldn't, that's a false economy. Why are there no lock washers on the thermostat housing nuts?

FYI, I flushed my radiator using the prestone flushing 2 times for over 90 minutes total. Afterwards, I flushed the heater cores one at a time by directly connecting a garden hose to each heater outlet. I collected all of the flush water in 5 gallon buckets (buy connecting a drain tube to the heater core inlet) so I could examine the results. A significant amount of sludge and scale was flushed from the cores. Note that I had visible sludge in the radiator, which is what motivated me to flush the heater cores individualy.
