My wife is the daily driver of the LX we just purchased, and like the truck before it she hates the rims, so much so that she has damaged 3 rims in less then a month!! What does everyone recommend for rim protection, just short of wrapping the wheels in bubble wrap! (Yes, she has been banned from drive throughs and street parking!!!!)

Maybe go down in wheel size and up in sidewall? That way she'll just scuff the tire. What size are you currently running?

a 285/70 R17 has almost 2.5" more sidewall, and a sidewall height of 7.85". This would surely make a difference over a 5.6" sidewall you have now. Find a pair of Rock Warriors and run 285/70s and you'll likely see much fewer problems. Or, maybe try a 305 width tire, which would bulge out further than your current 20s and protect the rim more.

Put bigger tires. I love 20s but I run on 275/60r20. The sidewall will be almost identical to factory size 18" wheels. As well the truck will look much proportional. 18" wheels look too small to such a big truck. Factory 20' tires to skinny. Getting bigger tire for 20" fixes both issues

A tire with rim protection. Duratrac comes to mind there will be other similar.

Bigger tires is the easiest solution, while keeping the stock wheels. Go up a profile size. 285/55r20. It'll drop right on and no mods necessary. More "bumper" for pesky curbs.

What kind of owner is your wife (or you)? I ask, because unfortunately, 285/55r20 are only available in light truck all terrain type tires. That means a tad more noise and somewhat stiffer ride. The the LX insulation and AHC ride plushness may make this almost imperceptible to most drivers. Much more durability, traction, and all-terrain/all-condition performance.

Best of the breed would be the Michelin LTX A/T II.

Put on some 20’s with 275/60r20 no rubbing no modification. Wife can’t curb these as tires stick out further than the rim.

Consider picking up a plentiful set of 18” tundra or LC wheels on Craigslist for cheap...or see if you can find 17” Rock Warriors...put some mild ATs on or something slightly wider than stock and she would be hard-pressed to get it to grind on a curb.

Spend the money for rock warrior wheels and KO2 tires. Probably best upgrade I made.

Ok so not wanting to modify, and unfortunately the LX is mostly a road warrior, is this a good tire to switch to?

The Discoverer H/T Plus™ is a highway tire for drivers of SUVs and light duty pickup trucks looking for a "sporty" look.
  • All-weather performance and handling
  • Tread designed to evacuate water
  • Additional rubber in sidewalls to help protect rims

I have the those Discoverer tires and am pretty happy with them. They have good feedback and no apparent road noise. They're pretty good in the rain as well. I'm not sure how good theyll be in the snow, as I haven't tested that.

Buy her the wheels she wants, she'll probably be careful enough to never scratch them.

No that doesn’t matter, she loves the truck and the wheels.....it’s just a woman thing, I was being sarcastic!

I love all the responses that go straight up to the most aggressive combination possible...for the wifee.

Nothing will do but 17" rock warrior with 35x12.5 Ridge Grapplers
