My unscientific quest for 20 MPG.... almost

Mods, clean up this thread.

Too much nonsense hydrogen and woodburning, etc...

Not enough of what the post was really about --- a great idea in changing carbs and seeing how it affects mileage in real-time environment.

Please remove all the hydrogen generator crap posted by all the people who know nothing of physics and science.

Thanks

T

lol i kinda liked it
but i do what to hear more about the 20mpg and more from idave who said he gets 19 in a 1f
my 2f head is in the shop now, im going back to stock carb (from webber) when i put the engine back together, last time i was able to measure MPG was when i drove the cruiser day of purchase (400 mile trip) i got 13-14 i believe mpg has gone down since... just never been able to drive enough to check (i increased lift and went from 10.5 wide to 12.5 wide 33" tall tires) i would LOVE 15+ mpg but if i stay @ 12 im going to consider a v8 swap :bang: i hate chevy and want to stay toyota but im not made of money and if i have to keep working on the 2f im going to have to stop throwing money at a problem and change my plan of attack

would a more modern engine like a 5.2 or 5.0 FI get over 20mpg?

Bennett how is your current set up running? changed anything? had to fix anything?address any problems resulting from smaller carb?

update*

I couldn't be happier with my Motorcraft carb. I have had zero problems and I get 17 mpg .
Remember I went with a manual choke for the 305 and I recently added a twist hand throttle I got from Nathan here on the board. High quality piece. IIRC it was an airplane throttle. best $20 I ever spent. Great for warm up and winching etc.
I plowed snow in my neighborhood this winter and and we had some cold mornings and my rig started
on the first click of the starter. More than mpg I like the fact it's simple and reliable. I usually cruise at 60 mph and she doesn't skip a beat. The absolute most simple carb on the planet to rebuild. I wouldn't change a thing. I used to have my mind set on EFi but no more.
I'd love to see someone try one on a 2F.

Nathans thread on twist throttle cable..

I have a Holley 600, I am not happy with, on a Chevy 283 with 350 heads. I called the tech-line at Holley asking about the Truck Avenger 470. He said I should run the 670 Truck Avenger. Obviously I want the most power I can get, but I would rather have a good running rig that gets decent mileage... Which one should I go with? Will the 470 bolt up to my Edelbrock Performer intake? Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks. Mark

i don't want to hijack the thread but it is always better to under carb a motor than over carb. and a 470 should be just fine on a 283 and i believe the bolt pattern is the same. a 350 runs very well with only a 600 cfm carb unless you were building a hi rpm motor there's no need for bigger.

Quick question:

Do you suppose that a 350 bored .030" over would be fine running one of these carbs (Motorcraft?)...
My quadrajet (old Rochester) puts me consistently in the low 12's on 35" rubber. I'd love to do better and still be able to afford to drive the rig! TBI is just a hugely expensive undertaking compared to this idea.

Cheers!
