Very happy to finally be a Toyota owner on this forum. I have bee frequenting the FJ pages because in my heart I wanted a new FJ, but the reality of my economic situation told me I was going to need a pre-owned vehicle w/o a car payment.

So just Yesterday I was driving through Reno, Dinner and movie with the wife. and I saw this Clean silver girl on a lot.

Exactly what I was looking for if I could not have a brand New Taco, Tund or FJ.

160k miles but very very clean, and picked it up for just a tad over Bluebook.

Many things are planned... Mild lift, Lockers, skidplates, Bumpers, maybe even a color matched chaser trailer.

Action shots this weekend.

So... Hi from Carson City!

IFS 4Runners don't lend themselves well to being lifted more than about an inch- specifically the front steering (idler arm) can't take it and the suspension rides rougher due to the steeper angles of the control arms. Lift it with 33x10.5r15, don't go with wider tires (ie: 33x12.5r15s) as once again, the idler arm cannot take it, and that will give you lots of clearance. You can also increase flex by adding balljoint spacers and then relaxing the torsion bars (more on this on yotatech).

Aussie lockers are great for the rear, I loved mine. One of the best mods ever.

Watch the V6, surely you've heard of the head gasket issues. Keep the cooling system top notch. The exhaust manifold wraps too tightly around the back of the cylinder head keeping that portion of the head extra hot already. Some people are convinced that by adding exhaust headers, they can avoid the heat build-up in the head and prevent a head gasket failure- in theory their logic is fairly sound, I don't know about in practice thouhg.

YotaTech gets more 4Runner traffic, so you might get questions answered faster.

I wouldn't plug that site... Most on there can't find their ass with two hands and a flashlight...

They have prolly 6 DIFFERENT tech sections for the 79-95 Toyota Truck, to this sites ONE...

And the reason it gets all the traffic is a: b/c of post padders that don't know jack about a truck, and b: there is no FAQ like this site has...

That is one confusing place over there, and round about the 6th or 15th post, you MIGHT get a good post about how to actually fix your truck...

The rest are just guys throwing stuff at a wall, and hoping it sticks...

Thanks for the info!

I had heard about heat concerns, the dealer put a new radiator in and I have a line on an electric fan to assist in cooling. I'd like to add some RunCool hood louvers too.

Is the Aussie Locker selectable via Air or electric?

Via backlash...

When you make a turn with a pocket locker, you're supposed to do it power-off.

That lets the cross pin back off and the inner most part of the locker, slip over the outer most (and make a ratchet sound) on the over-run side...

No air, no electric... Just 100% automatic, all of the time action. And that's why it does not appeal to some.

It is NOT selectable. And I'd say they work wonders in a auto tranny...

Hit up the FAQ's and bug the guys like NorCalBorn for their writeups to get finished! Hint-Hint-Wink-Wink!

:D Fixed! ;)

Now, back O/T..Auto or 5-speed? If auto see me about the trans cooler mod or about the process for the 5-speed swap to wake up the thing and get better mileage.

**Biggest thing with any sort of lift, get a LSPV lift and have the rear hydraulic pressure properly adjusted: Install a LSPV Lift!

Also, FWIW, hit up the FAQ's in the main thread: https://forum.ih8mud.com/79-95-toyota-truck-tech/151227-faq-submission-thread.html , and if you want any sympathy and inspiration, hit up this photo journal.

There's a few of us driving them and are always happy to offer up advise and help. I'm even working on updating the ECT Relocation Mod writeups to use the newer Tacoma Style Switch.

There's still the issue of some crosspin breakage b/c people stateside forget you need to relax on the go-fast pedal first, even with an auto, b/c of the torque multiplication going on.

*My vote is still for ARB b/c you have the added benefit of on-board air, regardless of the small issue of a possible split in the line if you don't maintain your stuff. The benefits outweigh the negatives.

Also there's a couple of shops local to you in addition to Yodaman and Toy Connection if you want to ever head out to the California Central Coast, both are well respected among the community.
