Well. Probably not a mod in the true since but I wanted to get this thing off the ground and up onto my ceiling of my garage. So I took a piece of 10' tubing in 1" diameter and drilled a hole in each end. Then I laced up a bit of rope through the tubing, and ran them though four eye bolts mounted into the trusses of the ceiling.

This is where it will live until I fab up a camp trailer this winter.

Pretty easy, I have plans to add a cleat at each corner to tie off the rope and install a few pulleys at each eye, but for now it is off the garage floor and out of the way...

... now for that crap ladder!

well, don't forget to check the height of the garage door opening before you get out after putting it on the roof.... :)

Yeah, my cruiser just fits into the garage as it sits now, with 4" of lift and 35's. So this will be a storage solution for sure. When and if I decide to mount it up on the roof of the 40 I will have to bolt it up/leave it parked outside.

I will remove the bars that are in place right now in exchange for when I pick up a set of Yakima or similar roof mounting system, but is working great for now.

cbmontgo, I think we are both going for the same thing, a light trailer/camper for use behind the cruiser... we should continue to bounce ideas off one another. I am convinced that I am going to scratch build mine. I think I can make exactly what I want for around 800 bucks and have the ability to build it over time.

Definitely. I just bought an M101 Canadian trailer from Koffer last week, and it should arrive in Dallas some time later this week. I am looking forward to figuring out a good way to mount it to the trailer. I am just trying to figure out a good material to use as a "deck" for the top of the trailer for mounting the tent. I want to keep it as simple and inexpensive as possible. You got any ideas?

I would weld up a 1" tube frame that would just fit the top, brace it at the attachment points for the tent with cross bars and small gussets and hinge it from one side. Have a sheet metal shop bend you a box (more like an upside down pan) and you would be good to go. Might cost less than a few hundred total and you would have dry dust free storage under a great lid.

I think I am going to custom fab mine after not finding much worth restoring for the cash I have available.

Post up some pics when you get that thing!

Keep Cruisin'

Rez,

I cracked mine open on Saturdayand was impressed with it. Then I packed it back up, put up some uhooks in the garage ceiling and used a pair of ratchet tie-downs and put it up on the ceiling. I did this with my hardtop when I hade my 40 and it works great.

Great idea with the straps, I thought about it but I didn't want to tie up all my straps to get it done.

anybody do anything yet to add smaller screens around the windows to keep the smaller bugs out? I was looking at mine the other day and was trying to come up with a solution on adding skitto netting on the outside of the windows with some type of stiching and an adhessive to get a good seal. Not sure about what to do for the door netting yet. Anyone have any ideas on how to improve the window screens? Also would love to have a bigger rain fly for the tent!!!!!

Laters

I am having my girlfriend stitch me up some "extenders" on the rain fly... I will cover the door fully, and have "peaked" overhangs that extend out to cover the windows on each side.

I will post up when it is finished.

put any thoughts in to battens / poles yet?

did you get it up there yourself? are all four ropes independent from each other?
i'm thinking of doing the same thing but want to get it up there with just two ropes... i'll take a pic of mine if i get if figured out over the next few days. i am using pulley's on mine because it is only 2:1 with a directional back down from the top.

thanks

Now all I need is a 10 or 12 foot tall garage...

That application would work for those of us in warmer climates who use taller carports.

Yeah, been looking at the tent poles on the market. The little "pockets" they would rest in are the trickier of the two to nail down.

Honestly, fiberglass poles may work out fine, but I would prefer the light and strong aluminum kind... just like a backpacking tent poles.

Nope, had two helpers... good thing I did, 100# tent, 10 foot ceilings... could have been rough.

I have two double pulleys and two single pulleys to install next time the whole thing goes back up. That should make things MUCH easier, but it works for now.

Post up when you get it rigged up, I would love to compare notes.
