Mt. Baldy (AKA Mt. San Anonio) August 13th

I'm heading up to Mt. Baldy again this Saturday. I got a wakeup call last Sunday when I loaded my new pack with 40lbs. of gear and met Brad and friends from IH8MUD at Manker Flats. Beware of hiking with BPenn (Brad) he is 6' 4" to 6' 6" something and he and his friends can motor. My legs were burning before we hit the first switchback and that was that. They went ahead and I huffed and and puffed till 8200' where I turned around defeated. I got in over 2300ft of elevation in 2 miles and a solid workout but still feeling like a loser I drove up the road to the Baldy parking lot, took the ski lift up where I hiked another mile of Devil's Backbone. Beautiful day!

Saturday will be the same trail but I'll be sporting 30lbs. less gear so I hope to be moving a bit faster this time. If your interested shoot me a PM, I will be at Manker Flats by 6:30am and on the trail by 6:45am.

Getting dropped on a trail, IMO, is worse than getting dropped from a pelaton. Not that it ever happens.....:roll eyes:

You're not a loser - you're just in training and getting in better shape.

I hope you have fun saturday. We're heading up 395 with the AdventureDuo tomorrow for a weekend up high and outta town.....!

Right on, I'm glad you're getting redemption.

By the way, thats not loser territory. I had 4 liters of water and a power bar to carry versus your 40lbs. No comparison my man

Good call on going light this time though. You've got plenty enough muscles, you just need efficiency from your lungs and heart to pull the oxygen out of the air and deliver it to them. Cardio trumps strength in this situation.

Supposed to be another beautiful weekend. Enjoy the pain... I mean hike!

Brad

Bump. It's going to be a really nice day for a hike tomorrow. :D

Success is sweet! The stats speak for themselves, the Baldy climb from Mankers Flats to the summit covers some severe elevation gain. I suffered severely from leg cramps from 9000' to the summit even after drinking two liters in 3.5 miles. It was worth every drop of sweat though and to share the joy of making it with your son is always special. Garrett was an awesome hiking partner although it was sometimes irritating as he made it look like a walk in the park.

Actual stats of today's hike downloaded from Garrett's Garmin Forerunner 310XT. Those are obviously not my heart rate figures, they are Garrett's who is a superb athlete.

Hey Brad. Funny you noticed that. We were throwing pine cones over the edge and walked right past it. When we reached the spot your friends went to I knew we had blown by it. The area past the ski hut and up to about 9000' is absolutely brutal terrain.

After beers and burgers there was no way I was walking down that fire road. The lift was a nice short cut for sure!

On the way up we passed a nice gentlemen in his early 60's who politely said hello and "see you at the top". At 9200' or so he caught us (because of me of course) and He and my son had a perfectly normal conversation while I tried not to throw up. Come to find out this was his 469th summit of Baldy. According to him he has over a 100 ascents of San Gorgonio, Tahquitz and San Jacinto as well having done Whitney, Mt. Baker, McKinley...yada yada yada.... He hikes every day and summits over 9000' 3 times a week. He has been regularly climbing the San Gabriel and San Bernadino Mtn. ranges since the 60's. Awesome dude! There is hope for me.

Hope your wife got home safely. :)

Take care.
