yes, very much like a sewing machine, so i just need to get the head rebuilt then, no?
Then the sputtering will stop? I hope so.

Your valve clearance may need a little tightening, but a great-running engine should sound just like a sewing machine. You might be just fine on that! :D

YEAH!, but what about the sputtering? Do you think it is the fuel pump? I guess I just need the pressure tested to find out. That would be alot easier than the valves/head getting redone. Rod

Yeah, I'd have the fuel pump checked out.

more on carbs continued

Well, it isn't the fuel pump, i took her in to a mechanic to get the numbers checked, and the compression #s were all over the place. 1-149, 2-120, 3-140, 4-50, 5-110, 6-160

the screen where the fuel line runs into the carb was clean. She is running better with some new plugs. It is still running a little rich, but oh well. The guy estimated 700-900 for the head job, I was like yeah, i can get a new motor for that, almost. The search for a new head begins.

Looks like you have a real problem with number 4: but did he wet test it? You may have something besides a head problem there. Someone else chime in here, but $700-900 seems an aweful lot for a head ($200 was more or less the range I recall that I spent).

I guess I am wondering about what would cause a piston to be essentially nonfunctional. Would a valve issue be that severe? Or is there likely to be more to it?

I guess I'd wet test first, to see if you can improve things. Also, check your valve clearances and make sure they are to spec, then recheck. Do you have oil in your radiator fluid or radiator fluid in your oil, to suggest a head gasket leak?

I am not to sure, but a mech in spokane was going to do it for 146.
It seems really steep, he said he would rather be high, and cover all possibilities, including milling, and a valve job, and the whole damn motor being rebuilt, Yeah, i would drive it to spokane and have it done for half the cost.

Well, if that includes a motor rebuild, that makes a whole lotta sense. It might also very well be necessary with that cylinder nearly dead.

i doubt it was a motor rebuild, but it darn well couldda been, i think i am going to try some jacobs compression restore, or something like that. I am going wheelin sunday, or should I not? I mean if i am going to have to get th evalves redone anyways, possibly the whole head, is there any damage I can do?
