good idea^ ill put someones eye out!!!

i was afraid of that. wonder if the box could be made a little narrower (going into the cargo area) and on disturb the 3rd row latch point??? i'll have check out mine this weekend

i was wondering the same thing. i did see in the cut pics by the 2 builders (even in the 'trace the outline' one) that the cut out area included the rear latch points.

I'm curious if the box's opening could be made less large (where it mounts in the deck) as in the front-to-back distance, while keeping the front-to-back-distance at the bottom of the box. this would allow you to keep the support people are describing that would keep the rear row stable vs only anchoring with the front points.

i see how this would make the box harder to make (maybe forget the angle, make the opening smaller but the "no box" part not sloped and instead just a missing box piece (picture a very fat upsidedown letter P). anyways, I'd like to keep the 3rd row while adding more space and the truck i've bought already has the tire on the swing out bumper mount.

meathooker, does your shop read/use solidworks files?

some thread resurrection...

i have now finished assembling a similar box, next step is some paint and a hole in the floor. Didn't have time for pictures before work this morning, but i'll try to take some later.

quick question, what did you do for latches haffi? what you have looks quite low profile, which would be good. I was going to use a pair of these,

!BuWtitwBWk~$(KGrHqEOKkMEvMu(qppcBL+-kIM1Ig~~_12.JPG

as have similar ones on the lid of my tailgate storage, but they poke a bit below the top of the panel, so restrict what you can put in the box a bit. What you have looks a bit better in terms of not sticking out below the lid much, but i can't really see what it is.

thanks

Hi, I´m using a Spring-Loaded Slide Bolt door lock similar to number 7 on this page in the McMaster-Carr catalog.

You can see it on this picture.

To open it I stick my finger down the hole and pull the pin to unlock.

Thanks Haffi, I couldn't really see what it was in your build photo, but now i understand how it works. Shame getting mcmaster carr stuff in the uk, or indeed anywhere outside the US, is pretty tough. I might have to bite the bullet and get the southco ones as at least i can get them delivered here. I think for now i'll be using wingnuts or maybe just prayer to hold the lids down. No more progress tonight unfortunately as someone is coming to buy my land rover tomorrow (i hope) so i had to clean it.

Everybody likes pics though, so here's some of progress so far. Need some paint on the galvanised bits and then to mount it in the car and finally drill and tap the top frame to accept the bottom box.

The box I made is a bit of a different shape from the other two on the thread because my exhaust exits out the side. Also as I was making it in the garage I thought i'd try to use the space under the filler neck. I only have an arc welder so construction is an angle frame with galvanised sheet cladding. I wanted to use stainless to do it, but it was too expensive, so mild steel and galvo it is. Don't mind the insulating tape on the box, its just to stop the sikaflex sticking to stuff whilst i move it about in the garage.

well a little while later and its painted up and in place. The whole thing took quite a lot longer than inspected, but i'm quite pleased with the result. Need to make lids and a floor now, but that will have to wait until i can get to the timber merchants. i have found someone reasonably close by breaking an 80 so i should be able to carpet the lids as haffi did, but with the same carpet as the rest of the car. I should also be be able to get some replacement tailgate carpet. as you can see, the previous owner did not take very good care of it and the carpet has some bald spots.

As for dimensions, i pushed these a bit further again and nearly ran into trouble. It all just fits. Height was a big factor as i wanted to fit in jerry cans, but did not want the box hanging below the tow bar brackets. It ended up maybe 1mm clear at the bottom and maybe 2mm clear at the top.

anyhoo, enough talking, here's some pics.

I was contemplating having this job done as I am having work done by Gary from MUDRAK. He pointed out to me that I may want to consider doing the additional aux gas unit vs storage unit. This kind of makes sense considering there is storage via roof racks etc, but running out of gas would be the worst!!!!

drain hole..

you may want to consider putting a drain plug of some sort if you plan on carrying around fuel in there... or any fluid at that rate. would make cleaning out a huge mess a lot easier.

Bad -Ass!

Very clean design, and very well built, Your workmanship is top!
But I do second the drain plug idea, I already had my spare oil spill in mine, and it was easy to clean with just soap and water all going down the drain plug!

just thought i'd add a few finished pics.

went with a rubber rather than carpet as i couldn't get any carpet, but it at least means its easy to clean up the dirt and oil from bikes. Also went with different southco latches in the end. I quite like the look of these ones and i could at least get them in the uk.

Few little paint touch ups to do yet, but that's it mostly done now. just need to fill it with my crap.
