I'm currently planning to be at Charlotte and URE that weekend but if that falls apart I'll probably make the run to Ashevegas.

I just talked to B&B . . . they are going to have a mini free raffle for UC members, with some cruiser and cigar appropriate prizes!

Todd - - hope you can make it. Now might be a good time to miss a UT game.

The wood roasted Duck is great. I think they have it on Saturdays too. The chicken soup is great too. And don't forget to say hi to the "Pie Lady."

Oh my god as in home made pie lady??? I really don't need to run all the way across the state for a cigar but throw in home made pie and a tour on the blue ridge, dang this is sounding like fun. :bang::bang::clap::clap: Can't make up mind!!!:hhmm::hhmm::hhmm:

Yep, the owner's mother is the Pie Lady. She has her own little corner of the restaruant where she bakes and sells all sorts of confections. You can't come in or go out without her asking you if you would like to buy a pie. She makes all sorts of stuff, but my favorite is a peanut butter pie.

Co Co NUt Crazy!!!Got to have home made Co co nut cream Muuuummmm!!!

Dang it's a dilema, don't think I can swing this trip, well we will see. Don't count me out yet. Thinking must be a way:hhmm::hhmm::hhmm:

The Plan.

:steer:Lets all meet at the main entrance to the NC Arboretum (Google it) at about 11 a.m. Turn into the main entrance but don't go beyond the guard house. (I will smooth this with the Arb).

From there we can proceed North on the Parkway to the Ox Creek exit and then come back down into Asheville on the Elk Mountain Scenic Highway, to Beaverdam Rd., to Merrimon Ave, where both PICNICS and B&B are located (side by side).

We will park across the street in a lot for a business that is closed. Bring your FRS radios and set them to channel 4-1 so that in case you get lost getting there, we can guide you in. I will ride "sweep" or "lead" depending on how many A-ville UCers we get.

FYI, the Parkway is closed from around mile marker 375 to 364, between the Beaverdam connector and Craggy. Not sure what your route is but you should factor this in -- made for a great hike yesterday though.

(And there's still plenty of Fall color up there -- looks like peak in that area.)

Slight Change to Starting Point: French Broad Overlook

I went out to the Arboretum yesterday and they didn't have a place outside the gate large enough for us to assemble. So, we will meet up on the Parkway itself at the French Broad overlook, which is mile post 393. It is perhaps 200 yards from the entrance to the Arboretum. Here is a link to the overlook. French Broad Overlook - elev. 2100' (Milepost 393.0)

From I-26, just follow the signs to the Blue Ridge Parkway, which will put you onto Hwy 191. As you exit to get on the Parkway, the Arb will be on your right. Pass the Arb entrance and go up to the Parkway. When you hit the Parkway, turn right and you will see the French Broad Overlook.

From there we will head North on the Parkway passing by the visitors center and the Folk Art Center and heading up the mountain towards Craggy. Our destination will be the Bull Creek Overlook, which should give some awesome views looking toward Black Mountain and Hickory. Bull Creek Valley - elev. 3483' (Milepost 374.0)

We will then turn around and head back a quarter mile to the Ox Creek exit off the Parkway and head down the Elk Mountain Scenic Highway into Asheville. It is a winding and scenic road with a number of switch backs and steep grades (paved), so make sure your brakes are working. This road willl lead us to Beaverdamn Road, then onto Merrimon Avenue, and a short trip to lunch and B&B.

The route is about 30 miles and should take us 1 to 2 hours depending on stops.

Thanks Todd for a reminder as to the closure, but our route takes us off the parkway around MP 373, which is before the closure beginning at MP 367.

Another little bonus

There will be a nationally known and published photographer at B&B, Mike Booher, who will take a group shot of our vehicles and members on Saturday. He will be providing his work to us for free and send us a digital copy.

I am trying to talk him into riding shotgun with me on the Parkway!

Speaking of Shotguns, remember that the Parkway prohibits firearms and that any firearm you may have in your vehicle needs to be in compliance with the following National Park Service Reg.: "unloaded weapons may be possessed within a . . . mechanical mode of conveyance when such implements are rendered temporarily inoperable or are packed, cased or stored in a manner that will prevent their ready use." 36 CFR 2.4(a)(3). The better choice is simply to leave firearms at home on this trip. Juice?

Thanks for the reminder of the 'special' National Park Service firearm regulations. :D Firearm regulations can vary widely when you are on a car trip from state and national regulations to some local regulations.

I'm only going to say that everyone should be aware of the National Park Service firearm regulation and follow it. I won't tell anyone to leave a legal firearm at home.

This sort of thing falls under the same sort of umbrella as UC's alcohol policy - which is you will not drink on the trail. Basically - don't do anything stupid that will get yourself in trouble or hurt or get anyone else from UC in trouble or hurt while you are on a UC event. I'll put a new post up with a sticky about this sort of stuff.

Just went by PicNics, our lunch spot for Saturday, and smoothed everything over with the owner Ron. They are excited to have us and will have the beer on ice!

Ok guys I am going to try my hardest to get to this, I am just out of the hopsital today and am looking forward to seeing all of you again. If anyone is coming up from atlanta and want to caravan to asheville let me know.

I hope you are feeling better!

I'll be coming up from the Greenville area and have an open seat if anyone wants to ride along.

Good to know the knife did not get you! Glad you are getting out and about. Can't promise this meeting but I am trying like the devil to arrange it. However Ashville is a long way from Charleston but the colors are awesome in the mid lands right now so should be a beatiful trip. Doc:beer:
