Montana Mountain - Saturday Feb. 21, 2026, 8:30 am

At the January meeting we were talking about upcoming runs and back by popular demand we're going to do Montana Mountain again. There were a couple people at the November meeting that said they'd never done it before and I have a buddy that just bought a 4Runner that wants to get out so it seemed like a good trail to start the year with.

I'd like to meet at the Hewitt Station Road staging area around 8:30 for air down and start the trail by 9:00. We'll run the trail clockwise and it usually takes about 4 hours. It's a fairly mild trail with spectacular views that a decent driver should be able to do in a stock truck.

I'll post up more info and meeting coordinates as we get closer but please post up if you're interested.

Attendees as of 2/20, we should have 5-6 confirmed and 3-4 maybes. I still need to pull out my guidebook and post the meetup coordinates.

7 - Jorsof (maybe)
8 - samtoddlee (maybe)

Directions - Head east on Hwy 60 past Apache Junction. Turn left at Queen Valley Rd. 0.2 miles past mile marker 214. After 1.6 Miles, turn right on Hewitt Station Rd. (F.S. 357). Trail begins 3.1 miles further on at F.S. 172.

We'll meet at the staging area on Hewitt Station Rd. Communications will be FRS/GMRS Radios and I have at least one extra.

Thanks,
Wes

Brand new here. I'd like to go. I've got an FJCruiser; if that is allowed.

Great, we should have at least 4 trucks then and I'm sure more will chime in as we get closer. I think last year we had like 8 or 10 trucks when it came down to it.

@MikeMc374, not only allowed but I think your FJ Cruiser will do great! It's a pretty fun trail.

@ftbshop, new truck?

I thought I saw a gx470 signature on your post and thought maybe you picked one up. I’m a fan and think they’re cool.

I'm a maybe. Just ran a portion of the 651 combined with the 982, Pucker Ridge, last weekend. I haven't done the full loop since I did it last time with Murf in the rain...years ago.

Hey guys, this is still totally on and anyone cool is welcome! Been swamped at work but will add more details asap. It’s about a 30 mile loop that takes approx 4 hours plus or minus depending on what we stop for. Starting point is off the 60 at Queen Valley road and the loop drops you back off on to the 60 a few miles east of there.

Any feeling about the switchbacks and other parts being graded?

I haven't been on this trail since last spring so not sure about that. Running it clockwise you mostly are going downhill on the switchbacks so in my opinion that makes it easier. The only drawback is any traffic coming the opposite direction has the right of way.

I am in for Saturday. I am potentially bringing my almost 16 year old with me and was wondering if any else will have a similar aged person with them. Her quote when I asked her to come is "will I just be watching a bunch of old men drive their cars" to which I replied yes. She's super excited to come especially that early. But it will be good for her. Are there any parts of this trail that a just starting to learn to drive could get some behind the wheel time without being a danger to herself, others or messing up the run? If not no big deal just curious. Maybe she'll love it. That's the hope.

Yes she will be able to drive several parts. If she feels uncomfortable she can always let you drive, She might take over who knows!
