I've always wondered why people put winches on the front of their trucks to pull themselves deeper into something they just got themselves stuck in...

Heh... Talk to the guys from the Moab "To Hell and Back" thread.
Without winches, they'd still be on the trail...
Winches keep you moving forward when tires/traction can't do it.

On the other hand...having the ability to winch backwards would be a great thing too...for those mud-pit, "what was I thinking?" moments...

The handiest winch setups are the ones mounted on a plate which is supported by a pintle hook. Or so I hear.
