I like the way the ARB snorkels look but do you have to cut into the side of the vehicle or can you leave it stock?

you have to drill a hole in your fender with I think a two inch hole saw maybe three inch.
at least 3". don't remember the exact size. too cold to go check.
It isn't a big deal. actually you have a 3" hole and 4 holes around 1/2" +. all in the fender. then on the a pillar, there are 2 more holes to drill. none of which are noticeable at all after the install.
the tricky part isn't the drilling. it's the figuring out what you are going to do with the stock air box

on the aust model 60's the inner guard ducting does to the oem airbox perfectly!
My Fj62 required 1 hole cut to the outside fender. The insife of the fender has perfect room to run the snorkel hose all the way to the stock air cleaner location. It took me a little over an hour to install (assuming you have all the parts, hole saw, etc.) I ended up making my own template b/c I got the snorkel used.
the aussie airbox is the way to go, but that is a bunch of money on top of the snorkel. gotta buy the box and the carb adaptor to the hose i think.

The ease of this job depends entirely on whether you have a US model FJ60 or an FJ62. I own an 87’ FJ60 and I had to do the same type of air filter housing surgery that jfnall did on his in order to get the air cleaner intake to line up with the snorkel mounted on the passenger side fender. If you don’t have the tools, skills, or patience to do this mod to your airbox yourself, your other options are to get a second air cleaner housing and have it modified by a fabricator, or run some rather long air hoses around, over or under your motor in order to connect the snorkel with the air filter intake on the driver’s side. (Not a very elegant way of doing things and lots of opportunities for that hose to get pinched or torn under the hood.

Bottom line: If you plan on installing the snorkel on an FJ60, you should plan to do the mod to the airbox as well. If yours is an FJ62, all you’ll need is to cut out the hole in the fender and you’ll be good to go.

I am puzzled by the question. How would the snorkel work to get the air inside to the engine if there was no hole?
Or do you mean you just want a fake snorkel for looks and do not care if it is hooked up?

If you didn't want to go the Australian route, you could loop some tubing from one side of the engine bay to the other. Doesn't look the best but it gets the job done.
