I have two questions:

1 I have to take the gas tank out to get the trans cover out dont I?


2. My exhaust heater flap is stuck so I want to just knock it out of there (stop baking my carb). How do I knock it out? Disconect the exhuast from the manifold and then knock it out from underneath?

Yes, you need to take the fuel tank out to take the tranny cover off.

You have to remove the exhaust manifold to take apart the heatriser flap. The flap is actually screwed onto the rod that holds it, originally, but usually it's pretty much welded in there. You could just bend the flap into the open position, or you could go in there and cut the bearing rod on either side. If you can unscrew the flap, you might be able to remove the clips on either side and push the rod out using a punch or small drift.

I took my cover off without removing the tank. It was almost empty and I did have to loosen the straps and lift it a little on that side to get to a bolt or two, but it stayed in. I don't even know what an exhaust heater flap is. Have a good weekend.

Hmm, Mayo. I would think after you did all that, it would be easier to take it out than to hold it up whilst you remove those bolts. But maybe I'll try it next time. I would worry about torquing on the fuel inlet and vent hoses, though.

Well, now that you mention it, all the lines were disconnected because I had removed the tank previously to "completely restore*" some rust under my tank.


*Completely Restore: to cover rusted areas with fiberglass & JB Weld so as to prevent leaking gas tank from falling thru floor.
