I bought a british military gas canister and it has a orange/red lining inside. Normally i wouldn't think anything of it, but when i opened it, the lining on the lid fell into the canister. Do i need to dissolve the lining before using it, i'm afraid more pieces will fall out and eventually find its way into my gas tank?

Also something i didn't think about is that the canister has no spout, what do you guys use to put the gas in your trucks? a funnel maybe?

A few more questions may help:

- Is it new or used / surplus?
- I'm assuming it's metal? Is it rust?
- Who manufactured the can?
- What type of opening does it have? Most makes have a specialized attachement to properly drain the can. You could use a funnel, but still sloppy and dangerous. The best thing is probably a supr siphon.

Cheers, Hugh

i got it from sportsmanworld.com or sportsmanguide.com, someone on this forum posted saying there was a special.

Its british military surplus, its not rust that came out of it, its like that orange/red gasket maker and it seems to be lined inside. Here is a pic of the can, and a pic of the piece that fell out. The pic of the piece is very zoomed in.

Hmmm, I don't know what that is, but you really don't want that in your gas tank! I have one gas can that is a similar style that I bought new, and I don't recall that it has any kind of liner.

If you don't want to chuck it, you could soak it in gas and see what happens.

As for filler, there is a special attachment to drain that tank that uses the same style cam lock as the cover.

Loks like just a chunk of trash. Probably just something that was inside the can when it was painted or "lined" or whatever. Toss it out and move on.

Get a spount for the can. Either one of the Cheap Chinese Crap units (Sportsmans guide usually has these along with the cans), or a real Mil-surplus one with a vent (if you can find one).

Just dumping the caninto a funnel is a non-starter in my opinion.

where is this cheap spout that you speak of?

Check the page with the "Swiss" fuel can, rather than the "English". Same damn thing, just a different surplus source. Anyway the page for th Swiss can also has a fuel spout.

Unlike what it seems to indicate this is not the NATO spout. Just the CCC spout which is made to fit the NATO cans.

I plan on just keeping it in the back until i get a roof rack (gonna be a while)

Try this... Order the "New NATO Spout" from Sportsmans Guide and when they send you the cheep POS Made in Tiwan call and complain that the ad said "New NATO" and it isn't. They will offer to send a prepaid shipping sticker and then you tell them it will cost them more to ship it than the spout is worth and they will credit your account and you get it for free. Worked for me.

Not sure what that is that came out of your gas can but it looks like something from the Body Worlds museum exhibit...

The ones that I get at the local hardware store come with a spout on them. Not sure if it's a civilian version or not but I'd be happy to send one out to you if you can't get them locally. Picture and price here:

just an option.

You can find all sorts of crap in the surplus cans- it really doesn't matter because military vehicles like the land rover always have a screen in the fill on the gas which filters out big stuff. The Brit cans I have all are lined with something like red lead paint- it usually comes lose and you get bits and chips of it over time.

Usually the military donkey dicks have a screen in them too to filter out crap that mighht be in the can- I'm not sure about the cheap chinese spouts.

As long as your can still has a gasket in the lid you should be OK.
