I've had the Cobra 75 -WX ST compact CB for 4 years now and it has been quite reliable and easy to use. The internal speaker went out last year but I went ahead and mounted a remote speaker instead of having it repaired. Now that I fried the wiring in the remote power supply I am considering replacing it with the same unit or I am considering the Midland 75-822. Both are compact 40 channel low watt units but the Midland has the advantage of being a completely portable unit due to the fact that a 12-volt cigarette lighter plug, a PL-259 external antenna connector, a portable antenna, a battery box for using six "AA' batteries, and an AC adapter are part of the package. It also has 10 NOAA weather channels versus 5 for the Cobra.

I think a few of you guys have or had owned the Midland and may have previously owned the Cobra as well, I would love to hear your opinions before I make a purchase.

And for those of you Hams who wonder why a CB... because there are still a ton of folks out there that run CB only.

I have the Midland.

I used it like a semi-permanent mount w/ a Wilson 1000 magmount.
Now I use 2M,
the Midland is just a handheld w/batteries. Easily stored in the console.

It's nice to have that option- I grew out of it but it's still there on the off chance I need to use it

I often need to monitor Ham and CB simultaneously so I want it to be semi-permanent as well. Can you wire the Midland for permanent 12 vlt power?

Thanks for your post.

I ran the Uniden 520XL. Didn't use it that much except when there were CBers only in the group. Nice, cheap and compact unit for permanent installation.

well it has a couple adapters- a battery pack adapter and a 12v adapter.
the 12v can easily be hardwired

Scott,

You've seen my set up. I've run the Uniden 520 for years. Simple, compact little CB. Nicer thing about the Cobra you are looking at is the all in the mic. I've been contemplating getting the Cobra and moving the faceplate of the ham up to the pocket below the radio head unit where the Uniden is now. Real thing stopping that is the PITA of removing all the stuff to get at the radio in the 80 series!

I've decided on another Cobra Brent, it's a great unit.
