Called the kern river area, where I am planning to go a few days before, sounds like a crap shoot over there, camping is technically prohibited unless you are in a self contained RV, I asked if a land cruiser with a fold out crapper meet those requirements, they could not say for sure. They are supposed to ease closures starting the 16th, but that was also supposed to happen on the 1st. Either way going to head out that way and figure something out.
I think all of the forest service/BLM agencies are awaiting an update from Gavin on the 15th, and will adjust from there. BTW AZ, and Utah, are OPEN as we speak. CA is the bitch. Do we see California opening a group campground on one of the busiest holidays of the year, or do you think they'd open right after to avoid the potential headaches?

Yesterday I made some calls as well... Inyo... Sequoia... BLM AZ, BLM UT... all said to ring back next Tues/Weds. But no matter what, we're going SOMEWHERE haha...

Have only heard about Mike bailing, I assume most of the group is still planning to attend? This becomes more important as backup plans start to form in case the site doesn't open, are we then dealing w/ a group of 5... 10... or 20? So I guess I'd ask that separately, if Belknap/Nelson Camp does not open, who would be in for the (unknown) "backup" plan/destination?

BnT going out like Waylon and Willie, I like it :flipoff2:

Have fun guys...wish I was coming.

I've been watching the thread, still tentatively planning on going. It would be good to get out, as long as it's reasonably safe; and being 65 with one previous bout of pneumonia under my belt I'm not one to provoke getting sick. Unclear whether my son will come or not due to him dragging his feet on some school assignments. All that said, there's a chance I may bail in the next week or so as plans finalize.

Well we got Good News and the ranger district confirmed that Camp Belknap will be the only camp site in the area opening next week. So MenMorial is officially on!

Guys, it pains me to do this, but in discussion with my wife here and the fact that I just turned 65 and have had pneumonia before (that nearly killed me), I've made the decision to bail out on this trip. It sounds like an absolutely beautiful spot and I'm sure I'd have fun, but I think erring on the side of caution is the best for me at the moment. If there's an alternate waiting in the wings, my spot is yours. Take lots of pictures!

Bud, Sorry to hear you won't be joining us next week. We will be thinking of you!

I also received this update from the Reservation site. Although there have been fire restrictions in the past we have always been able to have campfires in the designated fire rings. I am going to bring my propane fire pit just in case.

Important Update for BELKNAP

Fire restrictions are currently in effect that prohibit building, maintaining, attending or using a fire, campfire or stove fire. Persons with a valid California Campfire permit may use portable stoves and lanterns with shut-off valves, using pressurized gas, liquid fuel or propane.

Is there a clearing roughly 200 ft above camp that we could have a group fire? Haha... restrictions end above 5k feet. Def going to check in on this before the trip, don't want to haul 100lbs of firewood up there if I don't have to, plus... it will change how I cook!

I can tell you all exactly what’s goin on with the Inyo National if you have questions. There are fire restrictions here as well.

I'll have mine also

Huge restrictions for those in silver 200's with black rims and questionable batteries. BTW is there potable water there?

I wouldn't bring wood anyway, well not much, we have always had plenty up there (if we are allowed to have fires) I'm cautiously optimistic that we will be allowed to have fires in Belknap, because every year they have High fire risk signes up. But they did just have a fire up there 2 or 3 weeks ago, but it was quickly contained.
So far the weather looks to be in the 80's and mid 40's at night so, perfect camping weather. No rain in the forcast!

There is running water (faucets) from a gravity tank fed from the river. I've tested the water up there and its great, (coming from a water guy) about 90 ppm TDS, but I have an ultrafilter that will filter out any potential bugs, crypto or other pesky camp ruiners. So I usually just take empty jugs and fill up, up there. I have a pump we can draw right out of the creek, it goes right through our camp sites, as a back up.

I got the water covered, but then again I should be that guy🤔

Good think I painted over those black rims! Pow.

Just checking on the other guys who haven't confirmed yet, @guardcompany and @saltycoconuts. Are you guys going to be able to make it next weekend? We do have a couple open spots if people want to jump in!
