Tinkering around with the carb fan, trying to get it to work right and stumbled on this relay under the dash. The carb fan was running after connecting the battery and I just happen to feel this relay and it was pretty hot.

What does this relay do, aside from running the carb fan ( the fan stopped when I pulled it)?

And is it normal for this relay to be hot?

Thanks

A HOT relay is Not a good thing and suggests either
A bad coil side inside the relay it self , this is the control side

or

a bad contact side where the moving parts or Door is ..that handles the heavy AMPs load

or

possible wiring issue too maybe ....?

I see you’re retainer clip is broke off too maybe relay vibrated loose and burned up
To..?

There is a Bench Test procedures for your M4
Type relay in the FSM,s

may have to go foward in time to the TaN one
That is shared with the fj60 ?

I know Iv seen it. For sure , just can’t recall

You can PM me for further info or. A verified
Bench tested good replacement if it indeed does bench test bad for example higher then spec
Ohms or Resistance Accross the coil
Side control

Or

Same issue on the Contact moving parts side

Remember it’s a 30-35 year old internal moving parts part that does and can fail and burn up inside

But ....

a solid bench test procedure is next step

then well ......

You will know 💯 % Whats what and step 2

hope this helps .....

Matt

Excellent info, thank you. This is a relatively cheap part, so I'll probably just get a new one.
