That is lucky! My neighbors brand new Sienna had rats nesting too and it ended up being a $10,000 repair. The newer Toyota/Lexus wiring is using a soy based material for insulation. Rat's love to nibble on it!

Toyota Class Action Says Rats Chew Through Soy-Based Wiring

Fortunately, Land Cruisers are not affected:

Roscoe has filed the Toyota class action lawsuit on behalf of himself and a proposed Class of consumers and entities in Massachusetts who currently own or lease a Class Vehicle with soy-based wiring insulation, or who previously owned or leased a Class Vehicle and incurred out-of-pocket expenses related to the alleged soy-based wiring insulation defect.

The Toyota class action lawsuit names the following vehicles as Class Vehicles:

  • 2011-2016 4Runner
  • 2013-2016 Avalon
  • 2012-2016 Camry Hybrid
  • 2009-2016 Camry
  • 2014-2016 Corolla
  • 2014 FJ Cruiser
  • 2009, 2012, 2015 Highlander
  • 2009 Matrix
  • 2010-2015 Prius
  • 2012-2015 Prius C
  • 2008-2016 Rav4
  • 2014-2-16 Scion TC
  • 2012-2015 Sequoia
  • 2011-2014 Sienna
  • 2014-2015 Tacoma
  • 2007-2016 Tundra
  • 2010, 2013 Venza Ltd.
No comment on stupid class action lawsuits

Off topic a bit but it's an interesting story; Growing up I worked at a GM dealership in a small town in Oklahoma. There was one family that had a ton of money as their grandparents owned much of the land around and in town in the early 1900's, they had sold most of it and just rolled around in money. Anyway, this family was MORBIDLY obese and were horders, this was the mid - late 90's when you just didnt see people that weighed that much ever. These people would buy a new diesel truck every year because they would urinate and poop in their seats/pants and kept tons of food trash in the truck. By the end of each year rats had completely destroyed the interior and electrical systems making nests both inside and out. It was really sad as they had two young kids who thought of the rats as pets, I know DHS got involved a few times with the kids but they were well connected enough in a small town to avoid anything. The worst part other than the kids was that my 15 year old self was dealt the job of tearing out the interior and replacing it every year when they bought a new truck. The moral of this story is; Dont poop in your car and dont buy a car from the auction in Guthrie Oklahoma.

Sorry for the long story, just avoiding work on a Monday morning

Good to hear. I had the same thing happen to my long-ago 2009 Pontiac G8 GXP in a different environment (alleyway parking spot in Washington DC). I was also pretty scared but the bill ended up being $400, for one new harness and a couple hours of labor to replace it.

The amount of food that my kids leave in my wife's LX (I am a neat freak and have a total of zero things in my car most of the time other than tools and a chance of clothes) is more than enough to feed an entire rat colony. Not sure why they feel the need to eat the wires when there is plenty of nutritious junk food for them.

The soy attracts them and they sharpen their teeth on the wires
