I had a bit of surface rust forming on the lower portion of the passenger side quarter panel of my 87' JDM BJ70. Looks like moisture came through an opening on the inner fender wall and then sat in the area adjacent to the rocker panel.

After removing the paint and loose rust below I was left with a good size hole to deal with. Last night I took a drill with a wire brush to it, cleaned the surface and then applied Rust Bullet to all indications of rust. Now I need to decide to fiberglass or weld ...looks to large to fill with bondo?

Due to the location and my lack of prior experience I'm not sure how to tackle this one and would like to get some opinions from people who have done this before. I intend on keeping the truck and would like to repair properly. Thanks.

The proper way to repair that will be to cut out all the rust and weld in new steel. Using only bondo and even fiberglass will only be a band-aid and will come back to haunt you down the road. Do you have any junk yards in your area? You might be able to find one with a rust free section you could sawzall off and use.

There's not a lot of parts yards in this area that would have 70 series vehicles ...I will look around. I am planning to paint the vehicle one day so it would be worth welding new metal in, if the area only had one surface to work on it would certainly be easier.

I figured it was a non US cruiser considering you are from B.C. and it had those cool decals. I sold a bunch of 66-77 Bronco parts to guy a few years ago and he told me his neighbor had three 70 series in his yard rusting away. He said he would probably give them away. I told him I was born in the wrong country.

Yes it is a Japanese import, the decals are alright but the "super off-roader" one had to go! I would like to find a yard with one of those too, would be great to have a parts truck. Anyways I'll keep fixing mine up until I find a BJ74 or HZJ to buy, this is the only spot of rust on the truck so it's still in good condition.
