Revival of old thread here----- I dumped my old mechanic, he just couldn't be bothered with anything major at all.. I took my 80 to Toyota dealer for complete inspection. They invited me into the shop and the mechanic and I did a walk under as he showed me everything. Compression and leak down very good, ranging from 175-182 lbs. Yes, the head was off and rebuilt at around 175,000 miles. Rear main, front main, oil cover and power steering pump oil leaks. At the end of our discussion, I looked him in the eye and asked "would you drive this vehicle to Alaska and back?" He replied, heck yeah, fix those oil leaks and this thing is good for another 150 or 200 thousand miles... I replaced my radiator two months ago and while in there installed a new power steering pump. That leak is fixed. But the front leaks are getting worse, now I'm up to about a quart every thousand miles. I've studied the thread on the repair of the oil pump cover, and of the front main. I'm gonna have to borrow some 3/4" tools.. Toyota wants $127 for the bolts, gaskets, seal and a new idler pulley.. My biggest concern is cleaning all the darned gunk up...
