Im afraid to ask how much the smitty builts are? What ever winch I end up getting him it is going to have to nice or cheap and usable that I can clean up. He is not going to want a rough looking winch on that nice of a cruiser.

I spent about $550 for my Smittybilt XRC10 w/ synthetic line. I think it works great for the $$. I had a chance to get any Warn I wanted at cost and just couldn't spend the dough. I think I ended up w/ a good alternative.

I agree, with the synthetic line its the best bang for the buck on the market in the 10K range if thats enough winch for your rig. With those of us who drive tanks and need 12K + we'll see how this new harbor freight model Bad Land with a 2 year warranty is going to hold up to offroad abuse for $300+ and change it sounds like a deal you can't pass up. I'm perfectly happy with my Warn M12 but for 4X that price I think Warn is going to have to lower their standards to compete with their recent competition. I've read they're introducing budget models of the 8 & 9K winches. As for the 8274 you can't beat the durability or speed for a design thats been around since the 70's. Its still fetching $1400 - 2K new but its one of those you can carry over to other rigs or even hand down to your kids 20 years from now easily rebuildable and parts are readily available. Theres a reason its the most sought after used winch out there.
