I am a total newbie and just bought a 97 Lexus LX450. It is in great condition and I am stoked. However I just went to get the safety done for my registration and it would not pass because they said the bearings up front are really loose. Can anyone tell me how I get in and tighten them??

Check the FAQ section and look for the Front Axle Rebuild or birf job. It will show the method for setting the pre-load. You may want to consider doing the whole rebuild in the near future. The information you need is on post 24. Below is a link but you should really browse the FAQ just to see the information available. You may want to check your trunion bearings too for play. A quick check is to jack up the front and look for slop in the wheel with your hands in the 12 and 6 o clock positions. If there is slop there and no slot at 3 and 9 o'clock, then it is probably the trunions. If that is the case, you probbly need to do the full rebuild. That costs $1200 to 2K if you take is somewhere, and $400 to $500 if you do it yourself depending if you replace the wheel bearings. If your rotors are worn I would replace them too.

Read through this part of the FAQ. This what I used to replace all that stuff up there, but you can get away with the first few steps.

I would also search for "bearing preload." Differing opinions on how to do everything, but you can make an educated decision if you do some searching. Good luck newb. :)
:flipoff2: (Official mud salute.)

Edit: Oops... someone else posted as I was. Info still works though. :)
