If they start increasing taxes on mining they will turn into ghost towns.

Don't get me started.[/QUOTE

You do realize that mines are taxed on a system developed by the mines in the 1800's and no other business in NV is taxed that way (favorable to the mines of course)?

Also, when gold is selling for ~$1600 an ounce and anything over ~$400 is pure profit, you have to wonder...

And lastly, it's not like they can "pick up" and move, because no other state has it and no other state would allow the damage necessary to remove the gold. It's kind of a captured market so to speak. We are the 4th largest gold producer in the world.

I don't dislike the mines, I just think they should be taxed the same as any other business operating in Nevada.

You do realize the the gold companies are world wide and can pick and choose where they spend their money?
And that they own the mineral rights even if they are not actively mining them?
They lose nothing by letting the ore sit in the ground and waiting, the same way they have over and over again in this state.
The price of gold is also reflected in their overhead, so even if gold prices are higher so are cost.
If you take away mining and agriculture what is left of our economy? Gaming?
I think we all know where that is going.

I do realize that they are global, which means that they don't care about Nevada or the people that work here. I watched it happen when I was working out in Winnemucca. As a for instance, one of the mining companies mad a bad investment elsewhere and needed to cut some costs to help cover their loss, so their solution was to do the typical upperlevel trimming. If you worked for the company for over 15 years and where making good money, they started firing those people, so they could move lower paid people into those positions.

The mining PR machine is brilliant and they know if they throw token amounts of money toward the community, then everyone forgets that they only pay about 1% in taxes to the state of Nevada. Ask your company what their business tax rate is...

Again, I'm not saying we make the mines to pay anymore than anyone else operating a business in Nevada, I just think they should have to pay and be taxed the same as everyone else. The numbers are staggering and this is from 2012 numbers.

Here is a nice paper on how and why Nevada is getting screwed.
http://www.planaction.org/wp-content/uploads/Final-Mining-Report-June-2012.pdf

Their reported revenue is in the billions from the gold in Nevada, I doubt they would pack up and leave, too much money to be made here and we are the fourth largest gold producer in the world. It's pretty hard to just walk away from that and it's not like you can move to Idaho and start your new mining operation there. The gold is here and they will continue to mine here as long as there is a profit. No other state would allow the destruction that we do.

Better yet, do your own googling, I did and I found several articles and papers that all say the same thing, the mines are getting a hell of a deal and Nevada isn't.

Did I start this ???

When did this turn into Jack and Dan's political discussion?? :D:D

We can solve Nevada's problems the next time we are loading broken stuff on a trailer...:D:D

You both are great friends we can discuss this over a beer, I will buy, so I can join in ...:beer:

Sorry but you are both right...

Ray, sorry we got this thread so far off topic.
I enjoy people with strong opinions, and I enjoy people who have opinions that differ from mine. If you are always around people with the same mind set as yours you never grow.
Jacks post make me re-examine my position, I will go out and do some research and re-evaluate.
I have a lot more respect for some who will change their position when confronted with a sound argument than someone who will stand by their position against all arguments.

^^What he said. There are no hard feelings, that was just good discussion right there. I don't take anything that serious, life is too short and nobody makes it out alive.

Hugs and kisses everyone.

Regarding fishing… there's lots of great fishing opportunities to be had in the Eastern Sierras. Before you drop your CA residency, I recommend getting a life-time CA fishing license. Will save you a lot of $$$ over the years…
