Good luck. I look forward to seeing what you choose.

I have found that I prefer having the ability to view aerial images. With NAIP being so easy to get and no older than 2 year for any location that I travel I like being able to see the actual roads as built (using Arc). I've found that USGS is highly inaccurate road-wise in Colorado. Although the new generation of "US Topo" is pretty exciting.

hey e. Have you made any choices regarding this?

No I haven't yet. One issue I am wrestling with is space in my FJ Cruiser. I don't have good room on top of the dash. It looks like I have room in front of the dash on the passenger side but I worry about air bag deployment.

I'm thinking a small tablet running DeLorme TopoUSA, and then TerraSync (professional software). I'll put a GPS puck on the roof or just in front of the windshield.

Noticed that HP had removed the shipping delay info from the Slate 500 site so decided to try ordering again. Ordered on 3/20 and received today 4/1.

Loaded DeLorme Topo USA and Street Atlas. Both have capability to display draw files created from shapefiles and the topo version can also display USGS quads. Connected easily to bluetooth GPS. Everything went smoothly and it runs surprisingly fast, even when displaying an extensive area in Quad view.

I'm not to keen on the virtual keyboard (but I don't do the whole texting/email thing from my phone either). Easy though to hook up an external keyboard/mouse for occasional use. Hard drive is static 64gb but still have 33gb left after the Delorme installations (including 7gb for full AL/FL Quad coverage).

So far I'm impressed.

Very nice. Can you post up a pic of the install?

If you are asking about my install, well, I don't have one yet. :frown:

I am using a DeLorme PN-60 GPS unit in a RAM mount on the dash of my FJ Cruiser and I am pretty impressed with it so far. I took it on a 4 day camping and overland trip last month and the GPS chip picked up and kept signal very well. I'm going to play with DeLorme Topo USA tomorrow some. I plan to do a write-up on both the GPS unit and the software for anyone who wants more information.

<shameless plug> Southeast Overland now carries DeLorme products with free shipping on most in the CONUS if anyone wants anything, including Gazetteers of the southeast US. </shameless plug>
