On the upper end but perhaps solid candidates:

A lot of work done to this one. The high roof is really nice. I really enjoyed it when I had a HJ61.

A lot of upgrades by going to an 80 series. Fantastic factory turbocharged engine, coil suspension and this one might have locking differentials. Also in years to come if you don't want it you can get your money back easily by sending it south. Parts should also be easier to get than a BJ60 but both would present their hoops to jump through. Might be a bit further away than planned but a good buy doesn't come along all the time so I'd be willing to travel a bit if I were you. I flew to Manitoba to get the cruiser I have now and haven't looked back.

Talked to the fabricator of the Camo truck again today and also got an email from the owner outlining a few more things. Rad recently replaced and switched cooling fan installed, glow plugs are on manual switch, clutch and flywheel machined, fuel tank removed and painted with new sending unit and soft lines installed, CB installed, 9000lb Ramsey winch, injectors rebuilt 2 yrs ago, front rotors and calipers at 95% and rears at 70%, very new batteries and all fluids done within the last year (except engine oil which was more recently).

Anyways, I think I'm going to pick it up on Saturday. It would take a beautiful turbo'd 3B 60 with solid mods and not falling apart for under $9000 to convince me otherwise.

Looking forward to getting to know you guys and enjoying VI on a whole new level!

Regarding the Camo 60..... Just make sure to go for a good test run. Get it up to speed and make sure it doesn't shake. Then do it again with the hubs locked and make sure it runs smooth. Use any negatives as a bargaining point. The good news is that none of this cruiser stuff is rocket science.

I'd do a compression test as well.

At least it has a gear ratio swap and a 5 speed. Keep in mind that with 35's and 4.56:1 gears it wont be happy doing much more than 80kph.... although without a turbo it might be a non issue.

YardPig, thanks for the offer but the 3B and LHD just strike a certain chord with my inner most being...but hey, the guy I'm buying from is looking for an 80 series with third row seating and automatic...maybe I could point him your way???

The '87 that just popped up has the 2H with auto and a little out of my price range...looks super clean though!

slowandsteady...I will take it for a test drive for sure, at speed on hwy. Won't be able to do compression on it. I don't expect much out of it speed wise, as my memory is that of a bone stock '84. The fabricator has access to very cheap 3B's IF I were to need one down the road, but he assures me that this engine has been babied for its entire life. He bought it from a professor who was original owner.

Also without a turbo I'd say the price is a little high. I have the same gears in mine and I'd put a turbo very high on your list of todo's, the 3 -> 4 shift won't be happy.

Turbo can always be added later... best thing I ever did :) Can't recommend it enough!

A cut and turn is when the front axle is sliced and the knuckles turned to allow for correct alignment.

Did the guy say if he'd done a cut and turn?

Well shoot guys...now you have me 2nd guessing!
I wouldn't 2nd guess too much... just try and talk the price down :)

Hugh Jazz...that FJ looks nice. If I were to get an almost free 3B engine, how hard is the swap to do? And how much? That FJ doesn't have some of the "functional" upgrades that would come in handy for me (bumpers, winch, clearance with SOA, etc). Nice looking rig though!
It really depends what you do at the same time, what the engine came from, and what parts you had on hand.
For mine I did a bunch of other things at the same time (And the turbo almost immediately after):
1. Converted motor to 12V (Starter (Free with parts I sold to SeaPotato and then took back :D ), Alternator, Electric Vac pump)
2. Upgraded Alternator -> $150
3. Electric Vac Pump -> $250
4. H55 (5Speed Trans) -> Came with diesel engine
5. Clean up Frame -> $25 (paint ect)
6. Weld up engine mounts/ trans mounts -> Free-ish (stole mounts from donor truck)
7. Trans Mount -> $50 (Welded myself ... had to buy buy metal)
8. Mechanical Gauges -> $50
9. Pyro -> $120
10. Boost Gauge -> $100
11. Random Fittings ect -> $100
12. New Rad -> $150 (I think... I forget now)
13. New Fuel Lines. -> $20
14. New Rad Hoses x2 -> $30 (Different in/out sides (you could also use a bit of pipe or something))
15. Random s*** -> $200

Total: $1245 (Without turbo/12V conversion/Vac pump closer to $745)

I remember thinking after the swap it cost me approx $3000 including the engine (Engine/trans/transfer case came from a parts truck I got for $1500). In reality you could do the swap MUCH cheaper... it just depends what you have on hand, what you hack together, and what you buy new ect. In my case I did a lot of other work at the same time and replaced several things I wouldn't have absolutely had to.

Sounds fun! As with any modified/old truck you'll find lots of things to fix... the list grows quickly :beer:

Based on your situation/price range a nice locked 80 would certainly not be a bad option either if you're not dead set on the 60. That said an 80 and a sprung over 60 are a world of different!

Toshi38...you installed a $200 random s***...is this some hide and seek game you play with your passengers and when they find it it's too late? ;-)

As for the 80 idea...if it was my wife's daily driver then I'd consider it. But...it's my truck. I work as a Maintenance Manager at a camp in Mesachie Lake so I have many uses for a lifted, winched beast. The reason I'm buying it is so that I don't take the family wagon ('03 VW TDI Jetta wagon 5spd) and leave my family in the lurch in case of emergency.

PeeZed, you'll find that patience is a virtue when looking for a specific cruiser. Seems like $$ is burning a hole in your pocket, but if I were spending that much on a 60, I'd be taking it a bit slower. Either talk down the seller of the camo truck to a more reasonable price, or wait for a cleaner rig to show up on the market? You could also advertise what you want to buy on the Coastal Cruisers forum, as there are a number of 60 owners there that might be ready to move on for the right dollar. Would be a shame to see you spend a big chunk of cash and then have regrets.

I know we have never met, but if you ever need a car I have something like 5:steer: in the driveway mostly insured:confused:.... Or you need someone to go look at a rig..

Pretty sure you are hooked on the camo sprung over and that is good...

PS...people keep leaving notes on my BJ42 wanting to buy it, whats with that:D

But if you need anything..:beer:

Today I picked up the Camo truck. Came with Toyota manuals, spare and/or good used parts, and an open conversation with the previous owner and fabricator if any questions come up. There are some upgrade mods that are not Toyota, so I will need to make sure I get the correct part numbers if I need to replace...oh wait, he gave me EVERY part # that he's replaced. Yes, the body is patched and some weak spots mostly in the rear hatch area, but it just has to last long enough for me to find a cheap donor from the US and then do a swap.

It's no VW Jetta Wagon on the road that's for sure. But it held over 80kph on a 5k hill between Duncan and Lake Cowichan, so even without a turbo I didn't have to go to third gear, so I was pleasantly surprised with that.

Truck has Goodyear Wrangler MTR's on it. Not sure of the percentage left, but still decent. However, with the whole ICBC thing and coverage if you don't have a tire that has the mountain/snow symbol on it, I may be looking for a set of four tires. Not sure what the value of these Wranglers are still (I believe they are actually 315/75/16 and not 35's...essentially the same I think).

So guys, for a daily driver that will see a decent amount of gravel roads and some learning in the backcountry, WHAT TIRES SHOULD I BE LOOKING FOR AS A YEAR ROUND TIRE? I'm on a budget...I've had both the Grabber AT's and the Wrangler Duratrack's recommended for quality budget all round tires. What says you guys who've been driving these Island roads with 60's?

Cheers! And thanks for all the advice and heads up. Looking forward to meeting you and learning the ropes.

Congrats. Good luck with your new found addiction, and pop by a meeting some time. :)

Yeah, looks like it should be a fun wagon.

Fire a pyro on there if you don't already have one, hill 60 on the way to lake cow has probably killed more than one 3b...

There's an easy spot to drill out where the heat shield bolts up.

As for tires, I bought a set of bfg at's a while back , and to my surprize they have the mountain snowflake symbol on them. I don't remember that being on my last set, but that was a long time ago.

Good for DD tires anyways, I plan to find a set of 33 muds of some description on rims for summer tires at some point for my 60.

And yeah, We've finally shamed the victorians into having every second meeting on this side of the malahat....:grinpimp:

The Camo rig.
Since I'm from the Mainland, it might just be heresay, but that rig might have been turbo'ed in the past. I kind of think that it might have been a Kodiak truck from way back. $7000 without a turbo and fair condition body is up there IMHO.

Just thought you should know.

Blue, all the way. Put EMU's on and never look back. Hell, even instal a turbo on her down the road. :)

jvanhove, yeah it was a Kodiak truck from way back (20yrs ago)...but no mention of a previous turbo. Probably not the only camo rig he's had either. Regardless, it's mine now and so far she's a beaut.

Congrats ! Looks like a capable wagon.
