Hello, everyone! I'll be moving to the area in a couple of weeks from Korea and am looking to buy a vehicle. I've settled on a 2nd Gen Xterra Off Road. I'm new to the off-roading scene and am wondering if this is an adequate vehicle for what's available in the Springs area. Any thoughts or suggestions? Mind you, I picked the Xterra because it seems to be the best balance between a daily driver and an off-roading vehicle.

Since this is a Toyota site I would have to say that the Xterra does not compare to a 4Runner or an FJ80 for daily driver and for sure the 4Runner or FJ80 with factory lockers are much better off-road vehicles.

I'm not trying to be a Toyota jerk but I do think you will be very disappointed in the Xterra! They are not Patrols like I'm sure you are familiar with! The 80 series Land Cruiser is very similar to the Nissan Patrol with the exception that is's not a turbo diesel. :(

I think that your Xterra is a fine choice for a vehicle if you are interested in a balance of driving on the paved roads or on the unpaved roads. If you want to get serious about being off road you may be disappointed. The opinion that I have developed is from what we see off road (defined as mountain trails that have not seen a road grader). We regularly see Jeep Wranglers, Cherokees, old Broncos, Scouts, Toyota trucks, Land Cruisers, Nissan pickup, even Range Rovers. I can not remember ever seeing an Xterra, once in a while we will see a Blazer or a full size pickup that someone is beating to death. I would hate to see you buy a truck that has limited availability of upgrade parts and be stuck with the wrong vehicle for what you want to do. When you get to town, look us up, come on a trail run and see for yourself what is on the road, what is off road, and what works of others. Then you could make a well informed decision.

Good luck in which ever direction you go.

Colorado4x4.org, or TrailDamage.com for local trail info!

Nissan's are ok, if you cant find a decent toyota.. ;)

We are just giving you crap, the xterra should do fine all all the easier trails.. Yotas make an easier transition into the harder and more challenging wheeling!
