Then why the hell do you only rescue one "breed"?

bahaha -- because i love them -- and i am helping them from the trash that "breeds" them -- just because they're a out there and a breed i love doesn't mean i can't help them -- hell, they're the most killed dogs in shelters, and the worst maligned breed by society -- why not rescue that "breed" --

-- but also, i don't just rescue one "breed" -- lookie here at molly and her babies --

-- 0% pit bull -- some % rottweiler -- some % pointer --

Hijack - Glad to hear there are a bunch of fellow greyhound owners on this board! Ours raced at Wheeling in WV as well. 24 races, two wins. They retired him at 3; he's now 5. I've taken him on a couple of low-key, short lure course runs and he still definitely has the race instinct. Watching greyhounds run with fellow greyhounds (even just for fun, at the park or something) is one of the coolest sights in the world. [End hijack].

I agree on the conract, we won't be getting a dog from that breeder. We will be having the dog spayed (we're looking for a female) no matter where we get it, and are not interested in contributing to the over population of dogs. I have looked at the local animal shelter and not come across a dog that we want - yet. Not saying it won't happen, but if it doesn't we will be getting it from the most reputable breeder I can find. I have never owned a purebred like I said, and I'm not concerned about the papers. What attracts me is that I have a good idea what size the dog will be, what the temperment will be like etc etc. If I could fine a 1 or 2 year old dog of this breed in my area I would go that route in a heart-beat.

I know where you guys who tell me not to buy from a breeder are comming from, but I don't think they are all bad . . . they can't be. Plus there are bigger problems in the world, if I want a pure-bred newfie I hope it doesn't cost anyone a night of sleep or anything!

Here's my plug for adopted racing greyhounds...they are usually 3-5 y/o when you get them.

They come potty trained
Don't bark
Are very calm (sleep all day)
Appreciate any attention you can give them, but don't demand it
Have good genetics due to very selective breeding(very few hip probs)
Shed very little
Are very very sweet
Need very little exercise

I have never heard of a program around me to adopt ex-race grey-hounds. I'm in Canada btw, not sure if we have such programs up here?

Plus I simply don't want a grey hound. Not knocking them, but it's safe to say they aren't for everyone . . . sounds like they have worked out for more than a few people though!

I respect your opinions, and they make sense . . . . but we are looking for a particular breed. I know not everyone likes this aproach, but this time it's what we will be doing

when i get a place of my own the first dog i will buy will be a full blooded old english mastiff. Just an unrelavent piece of useless info.

it'll just cost a shelter dog it's life, that's all -- can you sleep well with that?

the days of izod shirts and labels are over -- choose a dog at the pound because you like it, not because its breed -- just be aware of the breed you are getting, and get a breed to suit your lifestyle -- i'll be the first to say that pit bulls aren't for everyone --

-- or, if you're really set on the breed, search on petfinder for the breed -- there are many, many breed-specific rescues --

They're everywhere. http://www.adopt-a-greyhound.org. Tons in Canada. One near you.

And for a very good reason. Greyhounds are wonderful pets.

I think many here aren't necessarily advocating a certain breed, but that you should adopt an almost free (and loving) animal from certain death instead of paying for one.

To each his (her) own!

just make sure not to get one so inbred it eventually suffocates itself due to its "breeder" wanting it to look "just right" --

I see your decision has been made, but in case anyone else sees this. There are adoption centers almost anywhere.

By you not going to the pound right now and adopting a dog today is costing a shelter dog it's life too.

That logic doesn't fly with me. I am not out to save the dogs of the world. Nor am I out to contribute to the problem. I just want a good pet that will (hopefully) stay healthy for years and we will go about minding our own business.

Like I said I appreciate your opinion, I just don't share it. I am not a bleeding heart type who will lose any sleep thinking that the fact that I got a dog from a breeder is by some whacky logic the same as murdering a shelter dog.

So in short, yes I can sleep with that.

I just searched for Newfoundlands in T6G 2B7 mail code in Canada and came up with a boat-load --

Who's going to do the brushing?

Learn to love slobber.

Big dogs make big turds.

At least Newfoundland's aren't white.......
I had a samoyed during some of the years that I wore business attire and my wife had to go over me with a fur brush every morning before I left for work.

Rare that a newfie sees ten years.

Sounds like you have done some reasearch. Be aware of large breed issues. my Female non-purebred saint bernard eats 6-7 cups of food a day. She is on a special food due to allergies and she gets ear infections. The food is about $40 a bag. It might last a week and half. Also, if 6 cups a day are going in....get a bigger shovel. You will need it. Do not let the dog sleep on the bed as a puppy. I made that mistake.
In retrospect, if there was going to be another 135 lb girl on the bed with my wife and I, it would certainly not be my dog.

All medications on a giant breed (and the newfie would be a giant breed) will be more, as it goes by weight for things like frontline. The lifespan is much shorter than 70 lb dogs, average life for a saint is about 8 years. The newfie would be about the same.

Because of people getting into Giand Breed dogs without doing research on the life change and the breed issues, there are several shelter and breed specific rescue outfits. Find a newfie rescue and have at it.
