looking at buying 03 and newer 4Runner, questions

Ok I am finally getting serious about a new model 4Runner with the prices dropping a bunch.
I am thinking a 4.0 V6
05 and newer they have a 5 speed automatic I think.
When did they put the variable valve technology on them? Do they do both intake and exhaust as I think my 05 Tundra just has the intake side controlled.
Anything else that I should consider as to which year to buy? pros or cons?

look at toyota120.com, the ideal site for 4th Gen platforms. I would recommend 2006+, they have round wheel wells (looks much better in my opinion). Definitely get the v6, it's awesome and has selectable 4x4 w/ torsen diff.
