I would love to go for a nice long drive through Nevada on dirt roads. There is something strangely beautiful about the desert.

I would agree. This spring I really want to do a wildflower photography expedtion.

Try Nevada

I live in Nevada and have ridden my dirt bike 100's of miles through the desert with out even crossing pavement. I also know of a crew of local jeepers that have gone from the Cali border near Markleeville to Utah and only had to cross over paved roads. No actual hiway driving at all. The catch though is no services. You have to drive on pavement to get to town for fuel, food, etc. They did it with a chase truck that met them at pre determined spots for repairs and fuel. Get a good GPS unit and download the best maps you can. There are so many roads out there that you could get lost real quick. Oh ya and don't forget about Area 51. You really want to stay away from there. That is unless you would like an all expense paid trip to the south of Cuba! seriously get some good maps. I've been out here my whole life and it is a lot bigger on the ground than it looks like on the map. My Garmin has saved my butt a few times chukar hunting. Good luck.

:flipoff2: Try it on a motorcycle!!! In the rain

(BTW, this is just a disguise for jealousy.)

This is kind of a hijack but i'm wondering if there is a company or a certain type of map that lists dirt roads or only dirt roads in a certain state or something like an atlas for that matter that lists many states. I have several county road maps that are for my area and also use a state atlas and gazzetter(sp), but sometimes those can be kinda sketchy on what roads are dirt roads (or something of the sort) and what roads are just back roads.
thanks

El Camino Del Diablo is the longest continuous and unbroken (by pavement) dirt road in the lower 48. It is about 150 miles.

Others are longer, but are broken by crossing pavement or even requiring you to drive on pavement for short periods.

It is possible to find a longer route by combining multiple roads, or doing a loop, etc., but no single dirt road is longer than ECDD.

It is also extremely remote, which adds greatly to the appeal. At one point you are over 50 miles from the nearest town. Cool stuff.
