Long Range America Fuel Tank sweet spot

Just had Valley Hybrids (thanks George) install a 40 gallon tank in my LC 200. Was curious for those who have one, what is the sweet spot for activating it to cross over to the primary tank? 3/4, 1/2 or 1/4 quarter empty?

Stupid question to those that have this tank... are you guys afraid in a rear end crash? Has these tanks been crash tested?

like most of you, I would not mind having more range.
 
not really, it sits behind the bumper and between the frame.

Besides the G-wagen (previous gen), I cannot think of one vehicle where the gas tank is behind the rear bumper. I think most (if not all) have moved it to inside the rear axle due to crash concern.
 
The auxiliary tank sits where the spare tire would be in between the space of the rear bumper and rear axle.

And that location is exactly why there are lawsuits against early Jeeps due to gas tank leaking and exploding in a rear end collision.


And are the lines in these Long Range tanks crash tested not to spray fuel everywhere?

So I can tell you this, the pump is S L O W, but you may already know this. I think your answer will depend on how quickly you are consuming fuel. I guess if it was up to me and I was in motion, I'd start the switch at 1/4 tank. That said, not sure there is a sweet spot. I usually find myself waiting turning it on when I know I am at an extended stop but still have the vehicle running.
 
Not sure about sweet spot, but I usually turn it on anywhere from E to 1/4 tank. The pump is slow, but has always supplied fuel faster than consumption in my land cruiser.
