Cruising along today when engine started making bad rattling noises. Looks like the double pulley bottom centre of the motor has broke. Trying to see in my manual what that pulley is called, but not sure. Also, is this pulley breaking a common thing for 1kz-Te motor?

Towed it to the shop and they are going to pull it apart tomorrow. I'm guessing that pulleys are dealer only?

Thanks.

Sounds like the crankshaft pulley? That is really not good. It may have damaged the keyway on the crankshaft, in which case the crankshaft along with pulley will need to be replaced (ie. lower end engine rebuild). You may have caught it soon enough though.

This problem sometimes happens when people don't torque the crankshaft pulley bolt tight enough (after doing a timing belt job). It's tough to do with the auto transmission, as the engine turns over while trying to torque the bolt tight. There are a couple tricks to doing this right...can't remember how I did mine at the moment...

Anyhow, hope it turns out to be a minor repair and the pulley simply broke in half or something... Not sure if a new one can be ordered in Canada? I'm sure you could find a used one though.

So it was the Crankshaft pulley. Basically the small strip of hard rubber came out so no damage to the engine. I got a new one from Rightdrive for $168 and replaced all the belts. Did damage my timing belt cover a bit, but nothing worth worrying to much about. Back on the road.
