Question time.

Will a high pinion e-locker out of the front of a 80 series work in a LJ73. I know that you have to modify the housing to get it to fit, but I wanted to know if it would work.

bonus question. Are the ring and pinions the same? If we do the swap we would have to swap the R&P out at the same time to match the rears.

lj gears

The 80 series e-locker should fit in the differential housing of yor lj73 with a small adjustment to the housing. Look under your hood for the metal model tag and look under trans/axle and the number should be G144 . This is a 488 gear set. The one from your 80 series is most likely not 488 unless regeared from another owner. You must keep the same gears ratio in the front and rear. I have emailed and talked to Zuk from www.gearinstals.com about the unique factory 488 gear sets and he has informed me that the factory 488's have an offset pinion and a thinner ring gear then all the north american aftermarket gear sets. So in conclusion you will probably not be able to swap over the lj gears to the 80's e-locker. You can buy 488's for the 80's e-locker with no problem. A simple gear tooth count on both carriers will tell you what gears are in each diff and if you measure the thickness of the ring gears it may suport my thoughts. I haven't pulled out my carriers to confirm this.

good luck
