Hi All:

Was checking-out a friends new ride, a '89 LJ73 originally from Europe. I had always heard that the LJ and RJ model Land Cruisers used HiLux running gear. So, I was surprised to see that this LJ73 has an off-set rear axle!

The transmission is a R151F (IIRC) from the plate in the engine compartment. So, which t-case is used in this model?

My friend was curious as to the axle ratio so we did the old "spin the drive shaft and count the tire rotations" trick and came up with 4.9 - does this seem right?

Thanks for any info.

Regards,

Alan

4.88 sounds about right. I dont know the code for the T/case you have, but I think the gears are interchangeable with 60 and 70 series with the same diameter idler shaft.
Ive been told others have used the gears from LJ7* to lower the ratios in their american spec 60 series.
The LJ have a 2.295 low in the t/case

Generally the diff is the same size as a hilux and as well the R series trans were used in trucks/4-runners. I think the R series trans were also behind PZ and HZ/HD eninges as well. The rear is still off-set as you point out - just a smaller diff.
