Heck, I'd leave it solid for all the strength you can get. With a license plate on there, nobody's going to see the backside anyway. ;)

One less chance for me to mess up another good piece if I don't do it. :D You will see the back though, it sticks out a good inch or so from the side of the body to snag every little twig or branch. I've already doubled up the height of the ribs on the vertical to strengthen it a little.

Should I leave the backs solid or open them up like the originals? Just asking because the original is pretty flimsy and this solid back is about twice as stiff before opening it up.
Solid works, If it seems too flimsy you could drop down a gauge of metal thickness, same tooling, Just a thought. John #3

Could you rig (and hide/disguise) a spring-loaded mount where it attaches to the body . . . kinda like the outside rear-view mirrors and the springy break-away hood ornaments on the newer cars?

Snag a tree . . . license plate bracket contorts . . . then pops right back to where it was. :D

Two and a half years later...................

I put this one together for Krusty. I just threw on a late model light. I have waaaaaay too much time into this stupid thing. So, I'm not real eager to do repros, but may get to them eventually. :frown:

Looks good Jim so if I put an order for one in now I can expected when. I plan on retiring in about five years and plan on working on them full time until my wife can retire a few years later. So is this a good time frame for you. Come to think of it with current economy it will probably be ten years until I retire:frown:

John

Can I get my order in front of John's since I am planning to retire in two years? It really looks great!

If you ever take on the project, I can you use two of them, complete assembly on each.

I'd better get in line here, but so far I'm in no rush so a couple of years sounds OK ...looks real nice
