I recently bought a PZJ 70 (1990). It's got 153,000kms on the odometer.

After buying the vehicle I had the engine and transmission oil; and air filter changed. I also had the timing belt and bearing replaced. Apart from this, I had the valve clearence adjusted as the vehicle seemed underpowered. The toyota dealer/garage had 9 of the 10 shims changed.

However, even though power has improved substantially after all these repars, there is a loud thumping noise emanating from the air filter case, especially when the air filter box is opened. This thumping noise I only noticed after the valve clearence adjustements. I had them redo the valve clearence because I suspected a leaking intake valve. I also had another garage check the valve clearence. Both the garages claim that the valve clearence is allright. The problem is the thumping noise- which both garages attribute to a leaking intake valve.

I've checked the engine compression after valve clearence adjustments and they are as follows:

cyl 1-4--- 32 kg/cm2
cyl 5------ 30 kg/cm2

Please help me troubleshoot.

Thanks!
