I think I have a leakiy clutch. I noticed a new grease spot in the garage, and checked the underside. The piece that is leaking is right behind the oil pan. I think it is the bottom of the clutch. The entire bottom of the clutch assembly is wet with oil. I am not sure where it is coming out. The clutch fluid resevoir up top is a little low but not empty. What do ya'll think I should I do?

I think you should keep an eye on your engine oil level as it's probably a rear main seal.

engine oil level is fine...

Here is a picture of what is going on. The light is shining on the leaker...

It looks like it might be dripping off the bolt that is on the left side in the picture...

Rear main seal, oil pan or access panel.

Here's a trick William: Is it dark or blackish color? Is it closer to clear or brownish?

Check the cluch fluid level. If it's low then you found the problem. Another indicator is if the clutch is feeling funny or not working properly.

If it's the clutch go ahead and get a clutch master cylinder and a clutch slave cylinder. CarQuest has them, IIRC. It's a pretty easy swap and needs to be done before the Crawl.

Do you ever take that bicycle off any sweet jumps?

It is a blackish color....and the clutch fluid level is down by about half...

If I go get these parts...I am going to need some coaching...

I'll help watch you swap it out.

William,

Use your nose, hydraulic fluid has an oder all its own, dip your finger in the clutch resivour and smell then wipe a drop off bottom of engine and smell again.
(never could spell)

well,
I did some sniffings around and had no luck making a connection. The Clutch fluid definately has a strong smell, but the leaked fluid didn't have much of one at all.

But the clutch fluid resevoir has gotten low. So it leads me to believe something is wrong with the clutch.

I can't work on it until next weekend becuase I have a big test next week. Do ya'll think it would be safe to drive? Think I should go get those parts? Workparty sometime next weekend?

also, , my master cylinder seems to look fine. I think the culprit must be the slave cylinder.

upon a third inspection. I don't think either of those cylinders are leaking.
It looks like the leak is coming from where the back of the engine connects to what I think is the clutch assembly. The seam between the engine and the clutch looks to be the wettest thing down there... And a good bit of the oil has run down to the lowest thing...which is the bottom of the clutch housing.

my apologies for all the posts...

If you are loosing clutch fluid then you need to replace the clutch master cyl. and the slave cyl. Easy repair. Maybe someone in the club that has done this will help you. I would but I have WAY too much to do to get ready for the ride. Not on my truck but t-shirts, hats etc. You can do all of this in less than an hour.

I've done the slave cylinder and would be willing to help. If it turns out to be that let me know. We can figure the Master cylinder out from the manual. I want to learn that one. I know mine has to go sooner or later. It's ancient.

Well good deal. I am busy this week, but will probably have time to work on it this weekend.

The clutch has definately lost some fluid somehow...

Nice sig.

Call carquest and get yourself a clutch slave sylinder and master cylinder. Won't cost much and you'll know your clutch won't crap out at grayrock. Take barry up on his offer to help, he has the 2  's needed to do the job.
