Recently picked up a 2004 LC100 (5spd manual/2UZFE petrol V8) with 270,000kms on the clock. Bought it knowing it needed a new clutch as it was slipping.
Finally got around to pulling the transmission off and replacing the clutch. Due to the mileage, decided to replace the rear main seal whilst everything was off (there were no oil leaks beforehand, just a preventative change).
Crankshaft had a small groove in it so a speedi sleeve was used to prevent any leaks with the new seal. Genuine Toyota RMS used in the replacement and only the retainer was removed during the install.
After everything put back together and test drove, noticed a fairly substantial (more than just a few drops) oil leak. Thinking we stuffed the seal install, pulled the transmission for a second time, cleaned everything up. Sat for a few days, no leak. Started up without gearbox on, got engine up to temp, few good revs - no leak. It was impossible to tell where exactly the oil was leaking from as it had spun up inside the bell housing.
Any ideas where we've gone wrong? Is it worth pulling the RMS retainer and re-sealing it? ie, is this a leak that could only be occurring under load when the transmission is in? Or is it best to leave as is and risk having to drop the transmission a third time?
